A game for the thinking man.

I'll not beat around the bush. Dota 2 is a time investment. It takes a lot of practice and dedication to learn the content of its gargantuan depth. To play it and play it well, you'll need to do your research, practice the mechanics, and develop your decision-making. All in all, you'll need to be a dedicated smart cookie.

Of course, these days people don't want to be smart cookies. They want to be spoon fed. They want things to go their way without any semblance of them earning it. They want to jump in and be the best off the bat, but like any game that offers depth, this is folly.

These people, unfortunately, still play the game. Unfortunately again, you will have to play with these people; they're at the bottom, and that's where you'll start. They'll be insufferable. As you gain more game knowledge, the extent of their stupidity will only grow even more apparent.

But as they scream for the thousandth time "invisibility is fuckin' stupid OP, this game is shit" you'll be buying dust of appearance to make the unseen seen. As they scream "omg Phantom Assassin noob OP hero can't win gg" you'll be working on your blademail to turn the assassin's strength against her. As thousands of idiots whine and shriek, you'll be getting better and better and learning more and more.

And eventually you won't be at the bottom. You'll have left behind the stupid people, because you decided not to be stupid. You decided you wanted to learn how to play the game.

And it's at this point that things become clear to you. What to do, what items to buy, who to play, how to win. You'll know all these things, and as the idiots give way to others like you, everything you worked for pays off. You'll be free to immerse yourself in the tactics, the strategies and the power that comes with knowing how to play well... and Dota 2 is second to none when it comes to the breadth of options available.

But most importantly... the game is fun. You're a lord of the battlefield, and you feel as such. Nothing feels weak if you use it right, and no foe is insurmountable. Find your niche and get to splitting heads with Axe or pulling meteors out of the sky as Invoker. Just take your brain along for the ride and don't listen to the idiots. Dota 2 is a great game... the fact it's kicking around a decade onwards from it's origin is testimony for that.

Remember kids. If there's ever someone out there who doesn't like something you like, it's not because taste is subjective. It's not because different people prefer different levels of complexity. It's certainly not because there's anything about your game that might, theoretically, need updating or fixing in a way that would still let the core depth of the experience shine through.

It's because they're idiots! You heard me, idiots! No one can ever have a difference of opinion with you unless they're somehow morally or psychologically deficient! And if anyone tries to get you to moderate that opinion, they're an idiot too!

@Spectral Time: Having an opinion is fine, but it's not always worth something. The opinion of someone who spent 70 hours on DOTA 2 is absolutely worthless. You have absolutely no time to learn the intricacies of such a game in such a small amount of time. Of course any Lo L player might try the game and after 10 matches they'll just compare the 2 games and say there is no counterplay, every hero is OP and all the usual complaints. The thing is it's just an opinion, the fact is that they are absolutely wrong. Poeple complaining about DOTA 2 don't usually complain about its complexity but about it being unbalanced (wrong) or "outdated" or something, which is subjective. I agree with Dangeresque here, even if he looks down on people hating it.

I'm not sure if 70 hours is a really grievous typo or if that's actually supposed to be a small amount of time.

It is a small amount of time. Very small. It's like 100 games maybe. In a 100 games of DOTA, a new player won't even scratch the surface of the complexity of DOTA. Yeah that sounds extremely pompous but that's what you should expect of a very deep game. It's probably the same for Lo L, even if it's overall less complex (there are just less mechanics to learn).

So yeah, that's why people criticizing the game after a few matches if laughable, they have no idea what they're talking about. They have all the right in the world to hate the game, they just don't know anything about it.

@Elki: That's the problem with criticizing MOBAs like Dota 2. Play less than approximately 200 hours and fans say your opinion is worthless. Actually play that long and fans say you must have enjoyed it if you played it for so long. It's quite a devious system in place, to ensure a cow is never butchered.

In any case, it feels to me that this review is, essentially, defending the game's habit of hiding large amounts of information regarding the mechanics. A lot of things are, in fact, overly vague and could benefit from being specified without needing to go to non-official websites.

It also says, "Nothing feels weak if you use it right, and no foe is insurmountable", even though Valve releases huge patches twice a year in order to ensure that no Hero or strategy is dominant. Remember, Lycan had a 90% ban rate about three years ago and split-pushing was heavily nerfed last year so that players could actually respond to it.

There's a strange sense of League of Legends victim complex coming from one of these comments... considering I'm calling low rank Dota players idiots who refuse to learn and didn't mention Lo L at all it seems like you're going out of your way to involve yourself.

Also that comment about game patches is laughable. I'm not even sure what you're trying to pull apart. There's never not been a patch where nothing felt weak if you used it right, and where no foe (bar stupid shit like Roshan-Chen) was unbeatably good. Not even Lycan. I didn't claim that this meant the game should never be patched for the rest of time, which is what you'd have me believe is the best scenario.

You're right, I now realize how wrong it is to argue over what is ultimately someone's opinion, as if I thought it could be disproven. I apologize.

Though, it does seem that you're using the word "unbeatable" to mean ''literally" unbeatable, rather than merely "powerful enough to seriously upset balance", which is how people often use the term.

Also, the only person who mentioned League of Legend was someone who made fun of LoL fans. So, not really a victim complex here.

If after 70 hours of gameplay (more than enough to beat most decent-sized RP Gs) you still can't be considered to have enough experience at Dota 2 for your opinion to even be considered worthwhile, then the game isn't worth the effort. It's overcomplexity taken to the ultimate extreme. And I find the idea that Dota 2 players say "you haven't played enough of the game to understand so your opinion is invalid" to be not only insulting and patronising, but also incredibly vapid.

I played, ironically, exactly 70 hours of Dota 2 before I gave it up for the simple reason that I wasn't enjoying it at all. You do NOT get to talk down to me and tell me that my opinion is worthless just because I don't meet the arbitrary standards that YOU have set.

Always expect the worst and you can only be pleasantly surprised.

Played 4000+ hours of Lo L over the span of years. Pretty sure these games damage your mental and physical health. I quit a few years ago and I wouldn't go back to 'em under gunpoint.
