I personally found Cry through the comment section of Pewdiepie's playthrough of Ib. I personally thought it was such a disappointment that I liked this game so much but there was so little self-insert and emotion from Pewdiepie, but once I read who knows how many comments saying that Cry's ending was downright depressing and such, I decided to dive right in and check it out. And literally, within the first couple of seconds of watching the first episode, I clicked the Subscribe button.
Definitely, the episode I saw was a fantastic entry episode, since it began with one of Cry's biggest highlights. First thing I noticed was that his voice was much more quiet, and SO much more soothing. Him reading the opening paragraph before the game began was a shocking revelation. It's akin to having a person read a story to a child to help him or her fall asleep. The humor in that episode, for me, was mostly hit, and occasional miss, but then again, I didn't watch his playthrough for the humor. And the descriptions are surprisingly hilarious. After all, some videos ARE filed under "News and Politics."
Once I reached the end, I felt so depressed. And this really proved to me that this was someone worth watching. As one of the tropes puts it, he doesn't take away the emotional impact, but rather, he gives it EVEN more.
Eventually, I started scavenging around his videos, and there was SO much I liked about his channel.
First, he does what several famous LP'ers refuse to do: leave a game unfinished because he wasn't enjoying himself. And with certain games, he really vocalizes how he feels about the game, whether he's enjoying the experience or he's on the verge of dropping it.
Second, his fanbase is SURPRISINGLY chill. Yes, flame wars still happen, and yes, fanboys and haters get riled up every so often. But frankly, it's much less compared to many other channels. So, even reading people's reactions to his reactions to the videos is a better experience.
The last main positive point are his reads. They are one of the best things for me, since I've shown that I'm very interested in stories, whether relatable, emotional, or horrifying.
Honestly, there are some flaws (since no one is perfect, after all), but he REALLY hits the mark as a quality Let's Player.
