HOPR retrospective season 1 review

So when I saw that someone from Channel Awesome, was going to do a retrospective of Power Rangers I thought oooh interesting. Although I stopped watching the show shortly before it moved to ABC Kids this was my childhood so I was intrigued.

The video opens with a rather cool tribute to all 17 seasons (at the time) of the show to the original Power Ranger theme. Sadly that's about the best thing about the video. Linkara then goes on to describe the plot of the first episode and the premise of the season introducing each Ranger and then introducing as he puts "the real stars of the show" Bulk and Skull. I thought Bulk and Skull were more annoying than anything, though they had their moments, but it his review and to each their own. I'm not entirely sure why he thought their subplots were more interesting than what's going on with the Rangers when most of the time in season 1 they didn't HAVE subplots. But when he gets to Tommy then I had to roll my eyes. Referring to it as "the smartest damn thing the show ever did." He does know that half the show is footage from Japan, right? It wasn't some creative bout of writing, Saban Entertainment was working with the footage from the show they were adapting that introduced a 6th Ranger. He then goes on to call it a brilliant move from a marketing perspective to write the Green Ranger out so he wouldn't be overexposed. Again that's from limited footage of the Green Ranger being available in Japan, not because of the American adapters wanted to not over expose him.. What in the Sam Hill is he even talking about? He mentions the Japanese company providing the show with exclusive footage just for Power Rangers so he knows it's not a completely American product.

One of the more amusing antecedents of his review was suggesting a magic vs technology being present in the show. Which is interesting but doesn't really make much sense when the Rangers own powers are based in magic and their mentor is a wizard.

I'm aware that that the video series is quite popular, but it's really not good. Most of what Linkara has to say is pretty dumb and a lot of overthinking an incredibly simple television series.

I believe the point he's trying to make is that they could have reused a lot of Green Ranger footage over and over again. Plus, they could have used more shot footage of Tommy interacting with the group, which they also didn't do.

Also, use paragraph brakes. Reading a wall of text like that is really hard.

They wrote him out 5 episodes before the Series Fauxnale, when they thought the show was going to end. No reason to go to the trouble of paying JDF to appear in 5 more episodes (well he did appear in a cameo in the actual Series Fauxnale but as a guest star he would be pay less than an actual starring cast member) the footage also didn't really work to allow the show to just insert Green Ranger. You had an episode where the Red Ranger uses the Green Ranger shield and weapon, an episode where Dragonzord isn't even used, an episode where the Rangers fight evil clones of themselves and don't even have a Zord fight.

Linkara's comment was stupid, is my point,

So he's overthinking, and the result is he says dumb things? I'm not sure I follow your logic.

I'm a geek.

So, this thing is 420 words, despite the 400-word cap. That rule is in place to make sure there's no room for folks to just put in summaries without actually reviewing. And yet over 100 words are just you talking about your prior experience with the site and the show, which doesn't really inform any of your opinions.

About 150 words are extended on whether the Green Ranger was over-exposed. I can understand this maybe being a sidenote but it means that in 250 words, over half your review, you're really only talking about one point.

Every other thought you have on this video gets like two sentences, tops. Why doesn't the magic and technology theme suggested make much sense? Yes, you have differing opinions with Linkara over Bulk and Skull, but do you have anything to say about how he presents those opinions? Thoughts on other facets of this episode?

Did you just post here to nitpick that one point about Tommy's supposed overexposure?

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I wouldn't have been able to do over 400 words even if I wanted to due to posting limit, so I'm not sure why your counting is off, I edited it anyways.

Most of his season 1 review was about the developments of the Green Ranger (because you know not much happens in season 1 that doesn't involve the Green Ranger) hence most of my review is commenting on his comments about the Green Ranger.
