So close to being absolutely perfect

Like many others, I was so excited to hear that they were making a Pokemon OVA that would actually follow the games. For the most part, this did not disappoint. For the most part, this is an almost perfect tribute to the games that we look back on today with childhood nostalgia. Which only makes the few issues stand out more.

The first problem is in many ways an excusable one: the amount of focus Charizard gets relative to the other Pokemon Red has. Since this is a Compressed Adaptation, it's to be expected that they can't show EVERYTHING Red does, and in that case it makes sense to focus on the bond he has with his first Pokemon. But it would have been nice to see the others do a bit more.

The Charizard shilling reaches a ridiculous level, however, with the introduction of Mega Charizard X. I am no fan of Mega Evolutions, but even if I was I'm confident I'd still be mad that they put Mega Charizard X in this special. Mega Charizard X has no place in Pokemon Origins, for the same reason that Togepi, Munchlax, Scizor, or any of the other Pokemon we've come to know and love following Red and Green/Blue have no place in Pokemon Origins: they weren't part of the original games. They are not part of Pokemon's origins. But since everything else that wasn't in Red and Green/Blue was left out, the fact that they decided to put Mega Charizard X in simply as a shameless plug for the Mega Evolution gimmick speaks volumes. And for a special that is otherwise so dedicated to capturing the spirit of the games we fell in love with, it's nothing short of sad.

There are many hopes and rumors going around that Pokemon Origins will inspire its own anime, following Red's exploits in more detail. I'm one of the many hoping that this is true. But I also hope that, if they plan to make a full anime series about the original games, they make it about the original games. Red and Green/Blue, whatever their problems, are where it all began, and they should be treated with the respect they deserve. And that includes not trying to force in aspects that weren't a part of them.

Dude, Charizard just turns black and slightly bigger for a few minutes. Calling it "nothing short of sad" is kind of an exaggeration. You shouldn't let such minor details ruin your enjoyment.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

I would also say its an exaggeration. The special was good. I admit, I wish Mega Charizard wasnt in it, but this is also a Cash Cow Franchise, they're not gonna put something out there simply out of the goodness of their heart, Nintendo and Game Freak are in this to make money after all.

The NCR is like Tim Taylor. We need more POWER!!

Actually, I don't mind Mega Charizard X: it was a good way to establish a connection between the origin of the series and aspects that were introduced later. If anything, it would be very strange if mega evolutions were completely and utterly nonexistent before the Kalos region in the canon (though I supposed you could say the same about pokémon from other regions. Oh, well...).

I was upset about Mega Charizard X being in it too as a shameless plug for X/Y, but I have to admit the fight between it and Mewtwo was still awesome. It was a great special otherwise.

Mega Charizard X wasn't a shameless plug. It was the entire point of the special! A high scale advertisement that draws the power of nostalgia.

Help?.. please...

So many people assume that because Charizard X was in this special, it was the special's only purpose. Apparently, it can't be a nostalgic special with an advertisement at the end. As if the producers would spend four episodes for just that. It's also weird that people are complaining that it was a plug for the games, when the regular anime has been a twenty-two minute ad since day one.

"A high scale advertisement that draws the power of nostalgia." You just summed up like 98% of what Nintendo IS.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

I don't think Pokemon Origins would work as full anime series. The four episodes highlight the big moments in Pokémon Red and Blue, but an anime series means that it would have to choose a team for Red for us to care about and dilute the storyline in order for it to be a weekly series. And Red is not the type of character that can have specific canon team, especially if his goal is to catch them all. He's the avatar of the player, and thus the player decides which Pokémon would best suit him. Having a full Pokémon anime series about would cause a bit of controversy of which Pokémon he should have for team, especially if he's capturing all 151 Pokémon of Kanto. The special bypass this problem by giving a glimpse of his team and only focusing his consistent Pokémon, Charizard. An anime series would need a focus of one team for the audience to invest in, and that will mean that alot of the other Pokémon would be pushed out of focus. Even if Red only catches them to fill the Pokédex, it would still be disappointing considering that alot of them could great potential fighters.
