For the love of God...

RELEASE CHAPTER 22, ALREADY!!

  • ahem* Anyway, to the series itself...

This is, hands down, the best of the best when it comes to Naruto fanfics. The author's ability to take characters and plot points from a series that I openly despise, and reshaping those elements into something I've read over and over many a time, is purely astounding to me. I love the thought that went into this series. I love the characters, and the way they develop. I love the twists and turns the story takes- both minimal and mind-blowing (see Chapter 20). This fanfic is a work of art, and something I desperately wish was canon, dark subject matter and all.

I can only hope it doesn't take TOO much longer for the next chapter(s) to come out, because this is a story worth continuing. Very well done- a fantastic read on every front.

It's this sort of immoderate praising of this fic that really irritates me.

I'm trying not to make this a flame, but the attitude in this review bugs me for a few reasons.

First, it reveals nothing useful or specific about the fic, and serves little purpose in convincing readers why they should read this fic.

Second, I don't like the tendency to gush over a fic and declare that it does everything Better Than Canon, or that you wish it was canon. This fic does a fair amount of "fixing" to canon (for example, portraying Kurenai as a better teacher than Kakashi, Iruka, and everyone else) and incorporating fanon that doesn't make much sense (particularly the Council that exists to make Naruto's life miserable). In those cases, it seems to say more about the reviewers' opinions about canon and what it should be doing than the fics that make those changes.

Third, this may be my opinion, but apart from the "better than canon" claims, this review seems to gush over the fic more than it deserves or is reasonable. I have to wonder how you would do if I asked you to think of how many flaws the fic has, and whether your view of it would be changed for the worse after acknowledging its shortcomings (to name a few besides the use of questionable fanon theories and favoritism toward certain characters, making others one-dimensionally evil, Gratuitous Japanese, and so forth).
