Gotta agree on this. I gave up on the first book about 250 or so pages in because I felt no connection to the characters or plot, and found it incredibly tiresome. Plus everything else you said.

It gets worse. Deryn degenerates so much that her only character trait seems to be saying "bum-rag".

No, that can't be right... she didn't have enough character traits beforehand for her to degenerate.

This novel was a massive failure for me in all respects. I don't have a ton of time, but here's a list of everything wrong with it:
So, there you go. This book isn't one I'd recommend to anyone - it doesn't really cause me aneurysms of rage, but it was pretty painful to read, and certainly not entertaining.
