I think Jerkass Has a Point could be used for the Illuminati in that they were not directly responsible for the explosion, as it was the loyalists to the Red King turning the ship into a bomb. Even if the Hulk had been on the ship willingly the result would have been the same. Thoughts?

Moving these entries here, since they are mutually exclusive when applied to the same characters in the same story. The Illuminati are either supposed to be in the right but do terrible things (making them Designated Heroes), or they're in the wrong despite not really being that bad (making them Designated Villains). If you wish to add one of these entries back, please see the Designated Hero/Villain Clean-Up Thread:

  • Designated Hero: Many readers have shown more support for Hulk rather than supporting the Illuminati, and not without reason. It was their plan to send Hulk into space without his consent, which led to him landing on Sakaar and being forced to fight in a gladiator arena. It was their rocket that destroyed Sakaar, along with millions of inhabitants that Hulk saved and his unborn child (even though it was due to Miek's tampering that it exploded). And it was their actions during Civil War that led to many civilians testifying against them and showing support for the Hulk and the Warbound. In summation, this comic book is considered less of The Hulk going on a vengeance fueled rampage against Earth, and more of giving the Illuminati the beat down they deserve.
  • Designated Villain: In defense of the Illuminati, it was explicitly made clear that they shot the Hulk into space because he rampaged and killed innocent people in Las Vegas. And contrary to Hulk's belief, they sent him to a world where he was meant to live in peace forever, only a malfunction was to blame for his ending up on Sakaar. Finally, when Hulk returned to Earth, Iron Man chose to be the bigger man and admitted to what happened taking responsibility for what he'd done. This is all promptly ignored and the only credit thrown to the Illuminati in-universe is that Miek watched and said nothing as the Loyalists converted turned Hulk's ship into a bomb.
