Would it be okay to add "Seasonal Rot" as an entry? Season 3 is generally considered to be bad because of its unfocused narrative and heavy reliance on continuity.

Would it be more accurate to call Season 2 a contested sequel? I’ve seen numerous people say they preferred Season 1 due its standalone nature and disliked Season 2 for bringing the Jedi back into focus and requiring extensive knowledge of the universe

Is there anything that can be applied here to discuss the discourse around Gina Carano? Like, it seems to be one of the biggest controversies around the show, continuing to feature her as a prominent character inspite of her controversial political opinions, to the point it pretty much envelops any opinion people might have regarding Cara herself. It feels noteworthy especially as it resulted in warring twitter hashtags being shared and repeated. Feels like Base-Breaking Character, though not sure how well that applies to performers.

What discourse/controversy are you talking about?

Was she controversial at the time of filming? Is she still filming scenes? Context is important in any such discussion, and any argument you wish to make needs to be framed as such.

I think she only went off the deep end with the far-right conspiracy theories fairly recently since her biggest issues were anti-mask and peddling idiotic election theories, which were issues that didn't even exist during filming.

I don't think Base-Breaking Character works because part of the issue is that it's individual people that are broken. The same fan likes the character, but hates the actress.

I'd say Death of the Author would be the appropriate YMMV item here. Also probably a Harsher in Hindsight given the Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters theme Dune has getting harsher when she implicitly supported, you know, overthrowing our democracynote

[edited since the comment I was replying to was removed]

As for the topic at hand, yes, Death of the Author is probably appropriate. I don't know what Gina Carano's political opinions are, but clearly they've pissed some people off, but it doesn't alter her performance in the show.

So I added an entry, trying to keep it as neutral as possible without both-sidesing the situation:

  • Death of the Author: Cara Dune's actress has become a very polarizing figure as she's taken to publicly supporting baseless and sometimes dangerous claims and conspiracy theories. While some have turned on the character entirely, one coping mechanism for fans of Cara Dune as a character as the actress doubled-down on some of these claims was to separate the character from the actress, still being fans of Cara Dune while renouncing Gina Carano.

It was cut down with the edit reason Opinions expressed by Gina Carano are matter of debate, and it's quite that the person writing the Death of the author bit sides with the actresses detractors. This is a case of political bias and is inappropriate. I don't wanna come across as bias detecting bureaucrat but the fact is people don't come to this website to have political opinions shoved down their throat to:

  • Death of the Author: Gina Carano has become a very polarizing figure as she has shared some opinions deemed contoversial. While some have turned on the character entirely, other people still enjoy Cara Dune as a character while personally disagreeing with her views. Those who agree with her views have applauded her however. Many people don't care either way.

So, a few things.

  • Firstly, the entry was cut to the point it no longer fit Death of the Author at anymore.
  • Secondly, it's both-sidesing the situation. The fact that Carano's claims are baseless aren't up for debate, they're objectively baseless. Presenting them as perfectly valid is, in of itself, politically biased and inappropriate.
  • Thirdly, it's weasel-worded the entry to meaninglessness.

Thoughts?

Then how would you suggest implementing the edit without both-sidesing the issue and acting like mask denial and claiming that the election was stolen aren't equally valid positions to "masks are good" and "literally everyone with half a brain recognizes that Biden won"? I intentionally avoided specific examples of her positions but it sounds like including them would be better?

As pointed out earlier in this thread, people only took issue with the actress when she branched into these (debunked) conspiracy theories, if the issue was with standard conservative views then people would have had issue with her from the get-go, you know?

So the consensus is to remove the entry altogether, that however still doesn't change that fact that the edit was made with an agenda.

It's worth mentioning she's on the hook for a lot of other things other than far right conspiracy theories (she's openly argued with other cast members against trans rights on twitter, for example).

And as of today, she made some tasteless comparisons of the criticism she is getting to being Jewish during the Holocaust... so yeah.

So, yeah. Maybe the original entry wasn't perfect, but it does seem remiss to not mention the whole controversy about the actress given it seems to be localized around this show and it is a fairly large part of the discourse.

My Mandalorian feed is roughly 75% Baby Yoda memes and 25% #Fire Gina Carano or #We Stand By Gina posts.

It’s all moot now, she’s been fired.

Considering I keep coming across people who want this show to kill Star Wars Resistance (despite it not even having premiered yet) would that be a one-sided fandom rivalry?
