So...while it seems I was mistaken about what the link was linking to, I'd like to also state that this was an opinion piece written by one person. One thing that we're supposed to be very mindful of is voicing a singular, minority, or fringe opinion as if it belongs to an overall consensus.
The way the example was written at the time, it did NOT make it clear that we were talking about an article written based a single person's opinion.

Really though, it's natter. That said, the trope seems completely shoehorned here. Taken literally it fits as a defied trope, but that's not actually what the trope is about. The writers are trying to make keep their audience from being apathetic due to the darkness of the world. Sure. But that's not the trope. The trope is audiences losing interest in a work because the setting is too dark. That's a huge difference.
I say cut it all.
