I'm confused about something from the Howard W. Smith entry: "Because Republicans supported women's rights, they couldn't very well vote against the amendment to the bill, because that would make them look bad and lose them support amongst women, so they had to allow it to be added to the bill." If Republicans supported women's rights, why would they vote against it? I'm asking because I don't know the politics of the time very well, so it's possible there are details left out that could be included instead of just saying, "Republicans wouldn't vote against the amendment because they supported women's rights."
