The original Paladins most probably weren't all Alteans.

As seen in the season finale, Zarkon was at one time the Black Lion's pilot and most probably the leader of the Paladins at one point.

There will probably be stories in upcoming season about past Paladins and their efforts to keep the Lions out of Zarkon's hands.
