The wacky series of turn based strategy RP Gs of Nippon Ichi predates Disgaea and in fact even La Pucelle...

According to Wikipedia, it was released in 2005. La Pucelle was 2002, and Disgaea 1 was 2003. Makai Kingdom is also a single game.
