Is the Catullus poem really an example? "Odi et Amo" is about a specific person, "Lesbia" (Clodia Metelli), after she treated him very badly (according to his poetry, anyway). The point of the poem is that he hates her for how she has treated him, but still loves her as well. It's not about how he is generally a love-and-hate kind of guy.
