In the Half-Life 2 Beta, Borealis was originally named "Hyperborea", you can even hear it in the radio transmission, when Odell speaks with Kraken Base ("Hyperborea, this is Kraken Base, do you copy?"). It's quite possible, that Robert E. Howard had nothing to do with Borealis' renaming.
