I really think this could be saved if we'd make it a bit less narrow. It doesn't need to only cover poorly executed transformations. It could be any time a Token Character is suddenly given backstory. (Ironically, Token from South Park would now qualify. He's not really a Token Black anymore.)
And the reasons why this trope happens is quite interesting, and distinct from whatever that trope is called about a cast member suddenly becoming a regular/recurring character.
Of course, if we can't get three clear examples, I understand it has to go.
