oh, so THAT's what it is.... merchandise.
Read it differently.
"Merch" is the Welsh word for "girl", so seeing a trope called "the merch" had me going "huh?" because it just don't make sense: you would not mix the English definite article and a Welsh noun like that. In any case, we'd say "Merch" (Girl) or "Y Ferch" (the girl) to make it work in Welsh grammar...
