Been a while since I've visited this entry...

You know, there was a time when gold was more common than steel. Gold has been valued since, well, the original Bronze Age. Steel didn't even get invented until the Industrial Revolution — though once it was, it still wasn't as valuable as gold because the primary ingredient of steel was common by then...

Gold is valued for its properties in fact, not so much the scarcity or people would be going for stuff like Iridium. Gold is soft, has a naturally pretty color, and is easy to shape for art and sculpture. The corrosion resistance helps, too, and that's part of why alchemists coveted it.
