Real life incident, probably in 1998–9: A friend of mine asked people not to use his door-knocker, so as not to bother the neighbors. (On the other hand, from the back of the house he couldn't hear knuckles knocking.) One time I telephoned him to say the doorbell wasn't working. "Go ahead and use the knocker."
