To a naive troper, "Screw the rules I make them!" does sound like it ought to be a variant of either Forgot I Could Change the Rules or Elite Agents Above the Law, rather than something having its actual definition. Given the actual definition:
- Bob is charged with enforcing the rules.
- Bob does things not even he is allowed to do, because he now feels he is above the rules.
I would vote for a rename to Screw The Rules I Enforce Them.
In short: Screw the Rules, I Make Them! is a misnaming that invites misuse.
I don't really understand the mythological/religious applications of this trope. For example, "Most miracles in The Bible would be this concerning the laws of physics, or indeed, the moral laws of God himself." Do these really count as examples of the trope, since "[God] does things ***not even he is allowed to do***, because he now feels he is above the rules" doesn't seem to apply here? Who or what disallows Him from sovereignty over physics or morality?
This was in the Film section, and didn't say where it was from:
- The Sector 7 section of the Government can get away with breaking any law primarily because of this. Although in this case, it also has a lot to do with it being an organization so secret, they might as well not even exist. This is even lampshaded when one of the agents flashes his badge and says "This is my Break-a-law-and-get-away-with-it badge."
This troper has a community/forum of +30,000 active members in latin america, so as "The admin" its particularly fun to be in charge... as in so much as to make a 45 point guideline but in the end of the last rule states 2 clauses: "The admin will break the rules as he sees fit and any dissenters will be banned without notice... have a nice day". Its fun to make the rules and break them.
"I've become death... the destroyer of worlds...and come to think about it... it's only the end of the world"
