How was this style of ship supposed to land? Did it keep itself perfectly balanced as it landed tail-side down, or did it land on its side and need to be pulled back upright afterward? The shape is clearly inspired by the Apollo rockets, but those were mostly made of fuel containers that were ejected after they were used, and only the tiny part that housed humans was designed with landing in mind.

The shape long pre-dates Apollo. Watch "Destination Moon" - you'll see one of these land on their tail.

Just like a Space "X" Falcon 9 1st stage does (as God and Heinlein intended).
