Yes, it is correct. There's some level of ambiguity, but the message is definitely found near the end of the book. Faith vs. rationalism and evidence vs. personal experience are major themes of the book, and to a large extent it is about the question of what would convince a scientifically-minded atheist to believe in a god.
Can anyone with a copy of Contact corroborate the claim that it's 'Religion is Right?' Because that really, really doesn't sound like something Carl would write. It sounds a lot like someone wishfully interpreting something a character said.
