Is the ship the same as the derelict seen in Alien? Because that was cavernous, cathedral-like and had a sinister basement (filled with eggs) - and the height of the ship lying on its side would be the width of the thing rolling as a wheel. So if one is roughly in line with the centreline, it would be a good 30 or 40 yards to safety on either side. I do concede that it looks on screen as if the thing is narrow, more like a giant tire - but that is just an artefact of trying to represent the situation in a way that "reads" visually.
