There was also a TV show named "Mr Smith" - about an intelligent primate (gorilla? chimp? They all look the same to me) who could talk. Either Mad or Cracked parodied it with "Mr Smith meets Knight Rider (Mr Smith to Kitt: Have you noticed that out of the three of us, the human [Michael] is the dumb one?")
If I'm understanding this correctly, this trope is related to the gray man survival strategy. Said strategy can be summarized to "become as unnoticeable as significant as possible"
