Ok, as far as the real life section of this, since when is pineapple a weird topping? People order pizzas with ham (at least sometimes still called Canadian bacon) and pineapple all the time. It is so common that pizza places just call that a Hawaiian pizza.

Uhm, okay, so is this a trope about anchovies as a pizza topping, or is it a trope about how people ask pizza places to exclude toppings when they only put toppings you include onto a regular pizza?

Number two. Often times you'll hear someone order a pizza and throw out "hold the anchovies", as though anchovies were included by default.

Come to think of it, I wonder where the trope came from in that case?

(BTW: I love anchovies.)

the joke is that anchovies are so repulsive that people take that extra step just to insure the impossibility of anchovies contaminating their pizza.

The reference to Firesign Theatre "The Firesign Theatre: "No anchovies? You've got the wrong man. I spell my name...Danger!" " Is only half the story.

On a different Firesign LP (Don't Crush that Dwarf) is a character that calls for a pizza delivery and by mistake gets Nick Danger's office. He says "I'd like a pizza to go with no anchovies" then after a pause says "What, what?" If you listen carefully on the Nick Danger album, you can hear the person on the phone is the character from the other side of the record.

So the joke is; a character in one story on one record album mistakenly calls a character in a different story on another Firesign record.

Also, as far as Garfield goes, he DOES like anchovies... Just not on pizza. There's a semi-famous Garfield quote, at least I THOUGHT is was semi-famous, "Why ruin a perfectly good anchovy by putting it on a pizza?" This solves the dilemma about Garfield and anchovies on pizza entirely.
