Maybe someone would like to write a little bit about the european scene. I've been only to one con, so someone else would be more appropriate.

One Question though: in the States, if weapons are used, you just wail on each other? Seems pretty weird. Here we have a setting, the pc's and npc's roleplay, which sometimes sometimes leads to battles.

It's been a good decade since I played in NERO (it might have actually been pre-schism come to think of it), but there was a fair amount of role-playing prior to combat and sometimes during, and the wailing varied by player. Technically speaking, you have to call out your damage each time and there are rules on how you must swing to try to prevent "machine-gunning" your strikes, but it is pretty rapid.

Most combat is between P Cs and NP Cs incidentally.

I wouldn't know where to begin. Swedish LAR Ps are very different from all the others, almost worthy of its own section. I am not "bragging" or anything, it's just... very different. We dont make any abstractions, characters don't have stats, combat is real and use realistic latex-weapons.

There are a couple of big campaigns going on. Kastaria, Eleria, Granland and KrigshjÀrta are the biggest I believe. Out of these, two are LAR Ps taking place mostly on battlefields. In a way it's boffer, but we take it ery seriousl and lay much more emphasis on roleplaying, even in battles. It's not about winning, it's about the story.

I dunno what to do with this, if it should be smacked in with the others, or be a "Swedish LAR Ps" section (which seems arrogant) or if I should just lump it in with the Europeans. Or If I should just leave well enough alone.

I'm from Germany and the LARP-scene is very... divided. First they were good old stats and abilities from different Rules (Dragonsys, Silbermond, Rulemaster to name a few.) The other big coming thing is DKWDDK (Du kannst was du darstellen kannst.) You kann do what you can you make me believe to do. The Idea is that you play something and the one you are playing with decides on his own account if he believes you what you just done. Example: You have this Wizard here with the pointy hat and everything he begans to mumble some mystic words, pulls something out of his robes what really looks like a Fireball, possibly glowing and throws it at somebody. The Person who is hit can decide what he does. He could scream that he is on fire and try to put it out by curling on the ground, he could say that he is pile of ash, he could say that he is not impressed by this little spark or he could blink and say "nice try tricking me." Or he could just ignore it because he thinks that this was not the adequate way to cast a Fireball.

"The most popular, movement-naming setting is, of course, Tolkien's Middle Earth, after which the LAR Pers (and anyone looking remotely like one) are called "tolkienist". Homebrewn settings are usually limited to smaller-scale one-day games, while large, yearly recurring games are set in Middle Earth, Warcraftland, Tamriel and other well-known places. "

As I understand it, this is basically completely wrong, at least in the UK scene- the closest to derived settings I'm aware of are the various pseudo-historical ones and the one based on Wind in the Willows but with more murder. Not sure how to clean this up, though.

I've added a section dealing with media mentions of LARPing. Hope noone minds.

On White Wolf's LARP, wasn't it originally called Minds Eye Theater? Or did Camarilla become MET? I know it was called Mind's Eye Theater when I played it.
