A similar variation of this trope seen far too often is people hiding behind a "character" and/or using it to excuse offensive remarks. Like when Doug Walker is accused of sexism or whatever, it's always The Nostalgia Critic's views, never his own. Never mind that every word that comes out of NC's mouth is either written or approved by Doug. Characters don't exist in a vacuum, and unless you're going to claim to be some kind of seer who channels a completely different and separate personality from the spirit realm, you've got to be willing to take responsibility for what you say, whether it is you, a character you play, or yourself disguised as a character.

Doug makes him say those things intentionally because NC is supposed to be a miserable asshole with serious emotional issues. You're supposed to see him as pathetic and petty when says offensive things that are obviously wrong(one review where he made a abortion joke even lampshades this by having another character stare at him in shock while he nervously back-peddles)
Even a friend of his has said the "it's just a character" excuse doesn't work.
Edited by 81.100.41.21 I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again.shoboni, I've often heard those things said about NC, but I was a faithful viewer for quite a while, and rarely if ever did I see any indication that the NC had any life or personality that existed outside of ranting at a camera. Maybe I didn't watch the right videos, but that's no excuse. If he's going to be a character, the character has to be developed and distinctive enough to be separate from the person.
But I was only using Doug Walker as an example. It applies to many other comedians as well.

Maybe renaming the trope to "It's just a prank bro" would make it more recognizable and/or iconic?
