The invention of the light bulb was not in a sudden flash of inspiration. Carbon arc bulbs predated the incandescent bulb that edison's team developed, and there was an industry horse race for years to develop a vacuum-pumped incandescent filament bulb.

Edison's team had better vacuum pumps, and they diverted from the carbonized-stuff path sooner, but it was the ceaseless labor of a team of researchers, not the sudden inspiration of a lone inventor that did it.
