I think it may have something to do with For Happiness, too. Especially if it contains "I hope you will be at least as happy as unhappy it made me to lose you, so it makes my grief worthwhile".

The Casablanca quote doesn't fit this trope. He doesn't give her up to make her happy, but because Laszlo's work is more important then either of them. He even says that they "don't amount to a hill of beans" compared to saving the world.
