Was coming here to say something like that, Tomu.
Also, I'd really like to get rid of the Real Life section. It's been a festering sore on this page for a while. We got rid of it once after it became a Natter magnet, but eventually the section got put back in and I was negligent about dealing with it. Considering that the main paragraph acknowledges the reasons people would do this, it seems to me there's really no need for an entire entry detailing the differences between Coke and Diet Coke and Coke Zero and yada yada yada.
Edited by AndrewNot saying it's evil, but studies have shown that when rats were given diet soda, they consumed more calories. Then in it's defense, I personally find regular Mountain Dew sickeningly sweet and can only drink varieties like Diet Mountain Dew.
The studies also gave the mechanism; to put it in layman's terms...
Glucose is the currency of your body. When your tongue detects sweet, it's expecting to have sugar—money—coming in, and runs up bills. (Well, releases the hormones and such needed to deal with sudden sugar influx.) Then it finds out that it's getting play money...after it's run up bills that have to be paid with actual money.
This isn't a problem for diabetics, since they either don't make insulin anymore or their insulin receptors are blown...which is kinda the equivalent of having nobody willing to give you credit anymore.
I'm putting this here in the spirit of cooperation and multilateral action: we really need to revert the closing paragraph to its original state before the latest edit. I repeat, there is absolutely no need to have any information about the intricate differences between Coke, Diet Coke and Coke Zero. It's enough to note that some people simply prefer the taste and move on. We are not in the business of launching lengthy justifications for people's taste preferences.
"Various studies"
I know we're not Wikipedia and all, but do we really want to reinforce the unsubstantiated rumors that Aspartame is somehow destroying our youths?
I'd edit it myself but I figured it'd turn into an edit war.
