Is it possible that the "fear death by water" bit from Mars is an allusion to The Waste Land by TS Eliot? I may well be overthinking this.

Don't know, but death by drowning on a desert planet reminds me of Dune.

To me it sounds more like plain irony instead of a reference to anything.

This page was the first confirmation I had about Tom and Carl. I was hoping they were together but was afraid I was just reading things into the narrative that weren't there. So Yay!!
