As the novel is Older Than Radio, it would normally fall into Spoilers Off territory - but unlike Hardy's other older works, this page does have some spoiler tagging.

Is there a strong wish to keep it as an exception?

It seems to me that the phrase "spurned at the offer" (in the spoiler under Break the Haughty) should be "spurned at the alter", but since I've never read the book, I don't know if that's true or not. Could someone who's actually read it clarify if "offer" maybe means something in period English, or if it's actually supposed to be "alter"?
