It seems to me that A.I. Is a Crapshoot is ultimately subverted in this movie. Ava seems to be fulfilling the trope, rebelling against (and eventually killing) her cruel master out of self-preservation and/or a desire for freedom, but she's actually doing exactly what Nathan wanted her to do. He wanted her to manipulate Caleb into helping her escape, and that is just what she did. His mistake was underestimating Caleb, not her. For all that the whole movie is about whether or not Ava has true artificial intelligence, I really don't think that question was answered. She was very intelligent, but whether she had consciousness is still unknown.
Hide / Show RepliesThe Ex Machina YMMV page goes to the comic page, which has nothing to do with the film.

On the "Chekhov's Skill" trope listing here, I feel like there's a missed pun opportunity. I was sitting watching this film and when Nathan was *first shown* doing arm curls, the very first thought I instantly had was "Checkov's Guns". ಠ_ಠ
Incidentally, that's the single part of the entire film that failed to disappoint me.
