"Mr. Gumby was first portrayed by Graham Chapman, rather than Michael Palin. ..."

As I remember it, the first Gumby (Cleese) was defined by frustrated anger rather than stolid stupidity. The distinctive head-covering was there but not the definitive overall look; perhaps that came in with Chapman?

Friends has a considerable amount of drama in its later seasons too, doesn't it? I think I've heard the late seasons plots compared to a soap opera.

Yeah. It's the later seasons that are more dramatic. I guess what's meant by the example is that earlier seasons had more of a Slice of Life feeling to it. Also I don't really remember any Full House Music. But it's been quite a long time since I've seen the show, so I don't feel like rewriting it to something more fitting.
