Ultimate Lazer, you are doing it again. Most of the tropes under Liao's entry are nothing more than pure conjecture: yes, the character might have been the character we see on the cover, but there is litterally zero official confirmation of it either way. It's all "supposed", "presumably", "if"s on top of "if"s on top of more "if"s. I thought we'd managed to get rid of that kind of stuff, but I guess not, uh?

"We can assume it's Liao." No, we can't, at least not for the purposes of a Tvtropes page. As has been said before, don't trope your own Fanon.

Disregard this.

I question the use of Small Role, Big Impact for Gerard Lacroix. Yes, he was apparently Talon's biggest opposition according to the backstory, and his death surely helped Talon rise to power. However, to me the trope still feels rather...weak.

When I think of Small Role, Big Impact, I think of a character whose influence, power, or tragedy fuels all or MOST of the story. For example, Uncle Ben from Spider-man, whose death is the ENTIRE reason we have a comic book.

Literally the most "important" thing Gerard did in the story was die, but even then, the "impact" is just one of several things that caused Overwatch to fall. Gerard only has one impact on the current story: the occasional mention by Widowmaker. Even then, though, the player wouldn't know who she was talking about unless they read her backstory. Yes, his death apparently allowed Talon to rise unopposed, but yet again, you'd only know that by reading Widowmaker's bio.

Really, Gerard's "importance" is TOLD to us, but (aside from Widowmaker's feelings) never really SHOWN.

I thought it fit pretty well. After he died, Talon went From Nobody to Nightmare and shaped the current events of the story. Yet, we haven't even seen him in a physical appearance. Had he survived, Overwatch would still be legal, Amélie never would have become Widowmaker, Ana wouldn't have "died", and Talon could've very well been extinguished.

But that isn't him having an impact on the story. He used to' have an impact, until he was killed off. His death led to a domino of other events, yes, but we might as well say Balderich had a big impact by that logic, since him and his sacrifice, the Bastions would have destroyed Eichenwalde, the Crusaders would still be around, and Overwatch would have been corrupted much faster without his pupil there to stop it.

Like I said, it just seems rather weak. To me, at least.

I also find think it's pretty weak, and an overstatement of Gerard's overall importance in the grand scheme of things. Gérard spearheaded operations against Talon, that's it: he wasn't the only glue that held Overwatch together. His death was most likely a factor in their downfall, but going from what *has actually been stated* in the lore, the rift between Morrison and Reyes, the UN commitee, the loss of the organisation's headquarters as well as the discovery of Blackwatch's shady activities were far bigger influences on Overwatch's downfall and their eventual ban than the death of a single man.

I'm gonna be blunt with you, Ultimate Lazer: some of your edits kinda give off the impression that you're treating these tropes pages as an occasion to sneak in your own headcanon. It'd be good if you stuck to the actual lore.

^^^ See, saying "if he had survived, then this wouldn't x, y, and z would/wouldn't have happened" is pretty risky and rather butterfly effect-y. I mean, you could say "If Reaper's mother didn't have a child, then Overwatch never would've crumbled." Yes, it's an exaggerated example, but I hope it makes my point.

I had in mind to include Sanjay from the comic A Better World amongst these. But before I go on with the tropes, I would like to bring it up here for discussion on lore accuracy.

  • Is Sanjay the Mission Control on Symmetra's infiltration on Calado? If he is, then he's probably the only one who had the idea of 'kill the Calado employees to make it easier' and 'blow the building up'.

Just one question for now. We're still not sure if Sanjay is the Vishkar employee left in charge of Rio's rebuilding that caused Lucio to rebel, so I'm not putting it there.

For now, I'll just put his section on comments.
