Being discussed in ATT. It depends if they official material capitalizes or not.

Why, precisely, is there a need to go out of our way to capitalize the name of exactly one species while not capitalizing the name of any other species? Leaving aside that species names are not capitalized, it feels very weird to me to have a rule — based on what, I do not know — to always capitalize "kirin" and "nirik" when we do not capitalize "pony", "dragon", "griffon", "donkey", "cow", "hippogriff", "yak", "changeling", "buffalo", "manticore" and all the rest. It would be clearly unnecessary and grammatically incorrect to capitalize all those species names, so why does there need to be an exception for one single species? What source is there that says it has to be spelled that way?
