Which version of the original Resident Evil 4 is the best?

That is heavily debated in gaming circles. The original for GameCube benefits from using real time rendering of cutscenes using the native game engine, but the PS2 version didn't have sufficient power for this so it had to have them prerendered, resulting in lesser quality. Conversely, the PS2 version did introduce the interesting Separate Ways side campaign for Ada's story (almost like a DLC before DLC campaigns were really a thing) which is well worth playing at least once. I played the PS4 port and can't recall the quality of the cutscenes in the main campaign, but in Separate Ways they were very poor as displayed on a 55 inch 4K TV. This makes me think pretty much every version after the PS2 one was based on that version's codebase, therefore resulting in dubious cutscene quality, because they almost all include Separate Ways. I can't speak to whether that's the case for the Oculus Quest 2 version (but probably not, if the cutscenes are in VR then they'd have to be done in real time, and it doesn't have Separate Ways), which has its own benefit of offering VR gameplay (and compare and contrast versus the remake's VR implementation). The Wii version offers motion controls. There was one poor PC version, which got displaced by the superior PC Ultimate HD Edition. Beyond what I've wrote, the YMMV page for the game gives a good overview under Polished Port and Porting Disaster, and it also may come down to controller preferences to some extent.

You're very welcome. It's also worth pointing out that the in-gameplay graphics of the GameCube version are superior to the PS2 version's, and also more capable of handling large numbers of the Ganado enemies simultaneously. I believe the drop frequencies of different items (money, healing and ammo) are tweaked, which has bearing for those who like to do Self-Imposed Challenge runs. To weigh in on your question with my personal opinion, I still like the GameCube version best for better performance, the controller and general "first is best" factor, but I'm more than happy to play the PS4 one so as to access Separate Ways (appalling near-20 years old, PS2-hardware-compromised cutscene graphics aside). I'd really like to play the Oculus Quest VR version but I don't think I can bring myself to pay the premium required, so would have to maybe borrow it from a friend at some point. And, it may well be that the VR mode in the remake renders it obsolete.

The Dev Team Thinks of Everything

  • At the cabin, Luis says, "The President equipped his daughter with ballistics," implying that Ashley's figure has artificial enhancement. The bioscan of Ashley while she's in the machine getting her plagas removed later in the game shows a complete lack of "ballistics", indicating Luis knew what he was talking about.

"It shows the same torso for Leon." Yes, that's the point exactly. Leon and Ashley are the same build, pretty much the exact same physical model. Using the same torso model.

The major difference are Ashley's ballistics. Using the same torso model for both scans shows Ashley's protuberances are fake (or perhaps even a padded bra).

That's not that trope. They used the same torso most likely out of laziness just for that one part. They weren't thinking that the President would have given fake boobs to his teenage daughter.

From my original post: At the cabin, Luis says, "The President equipped his daughter with ballistics," implying that Ashley's figure has artificial enhancement.

Not really. He's just saying she has big breasts. Leon and Ashley aren't the same build, and the bioscan would still have shown something of her breasts because even if they're silicon, there's still flesh and blood around them.

I was on the character page a moment ago, and I noticed something. There's nothing on the character page for Leon! I'm still getting used to being an "official" Troper, so I was wondering if I could get some help putting that together, and maybe also just cleaning up the page?
