Also, I forget when that fight with Amon happens (was it before or after TheReveal about Amon\'s powers?). In any case though, I think that was less to show Mako as powerful and more about showing the limits of Amon\'s powers (so that it would be less of an AssPull that Korra could defeat him/restore others\' bending).

Like I really do think that there was sort of bad writing- its like \'\'LOK\'\' was following in the footsteps of \'\'ATLA\'\' in having the Avatar assisted by a team and to some extent it felt less organic. Because Mako was the Avatar\'s boyfriend, it probably got him more of an important combat role (compare with Katara in the original series who was presented as a very powerful Waterbender). If the creators had chosen Korra to be with Bolin than he probably would have been the one fighting Amon.

Mako and Bolin started out in the same position, but because the creators chose to make Mako the romantic interest and emphasized Bolin\\\'s role as a ButtMonkey, Mako got to be the one fighting Amon.

Basically, Amon was always able to NoSell people because he was subtly using his Bloodbending to weaken their attacks/throw off their aim.

If Bolin had been received that development instead, we\\\'d probably have threads here about how Bolin is a CreatorsPet (well, maybe not). You can of course complain that he and not Bolin is the deuteragonist (many do for good and not so good reasons), but since Mako is the deuteragonist, he does the stuff expected of that role.

One other thought- it seems to me that Mako was created as someone the creators thought fans would consider cool, and were surprised when he received negative reaction, and it seems they are trying to fix things in the second season. If he was a CreatorsPet, the audience would be getting more the same. Also note that the show was originally going to be an OVA before it got extended into a full series. Thus, CharacterDevelopment suffered all around.

I\\\'m also going to put it out there that you have to take into account that this series was originally going to be an OVA before it was renewed. CharacterDevelopment definitely suffered all around, and you can see some efforts to fix things in the second season. Basically, the creators put the show out there and then after that received fan reaction. If Mako was a CreatorsPet, you\\\'d have fans hating him and the creators continuing to promote him season after season.
