I would never prevent you from taking proper vengeance for your mother.\\\\\\\\
Let me specifically define proper vengeance, in the Fire Nation. Bluntly, it does not include me, Uncle Iroh, or anyone else currently on Suzuran. \\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'We did not do it.\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'

Chapter 77;
->\\\"Deserted.\\\" Zuko\\\'s voice was so calm, it grated. \\\"As in, nobody lives here right now. Not like the Northern Temple, or that really weird guy at the Eastern Temple. Who in their right mind drinks banana-onion...\\\" He stopped, scar sucking up the light like a hungry shadow. \\\"Katara? Are you feeling okay? It\\\'s been a long night.\\\"\\\\\\\\

Over and over and over, Zuko/Iroh/Fire-Nationals-In-General are presented with crimes committed by their Nation. Every time, their response is the same. Denial, like a child confronted with a broken dish; \\\"\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'ItsNotMyFault.\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\"

\\\'\\\'They weren\\\'t asked if it\\\'s their fault.\\\'\\\' When they are shown something inherently wrong, they won\\\'t acknowledge that it\\\'s wrong. They talk about what could fix it(Uh, maybe you should pick it up? The broom\\\'s in the closet.), or that so-and-so did it(Timmy did it, not me! He\\\'s in the backyard!). The injured want \\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'denouncement.\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\' All they ever get is \\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'denial.\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'\\\'

And that\\\'s why I think that in the Embersverse, the war will never really be over. Outside of Dragon\\\'s Wings, it should be Literature/Dune-style jihad - \\\"women throwing their babies at Fire Nation soldiers to open up a wedge for their men to attack\\\". An edict from the Earth King won\\\'t do anything unless he\\\'s willing to curse his own people en masse to enforce it - he was an ignorant figurehead that let the Dai Li savage his city. Why should anyone sane respect him without mindbending or chi-bonds? Hell, I understand why Fong hit Dragon\\\'s Wings - what good is a stamped treaty from the Earth King? All that requires is a \\\'\\\'stamp\\\'\\\' that was lost in an occupied city!

Nothing will change until Fire Nationals tell the world that The War Is Wrong instead of The War Is Not My Fault. CaptainObvious, maybe. But people need to hear it or they will kill every last firebender. Period.

ItsNotMyFault. Gah. Worst part? Useless, stupid Aang understands this!

Chapter 54;
->For a moment, she stopped. \\\"If Katara can fix him, she will. If Master Piandao can fix him, he will. Sokka\\\'s gonna wake up. Or he won\\\'t.\\\" She swallowed. \\\"Any way you slice it, we\\\'ve got to leave. So we can get you out of here.\\\"\\\\\\\\
Now, that was just not fair. \\\"I didn\\\'t do this!\\\"\\\\\\\\
\\\"No,\\\" Toph bit out. \\\"You just didn\\\'t stop it.\\\"\\\\\\\\
Feet struck the ground, and she rode a green wave away.\\\\\\\\
No, Aang admitted to himself. I didn\\\'t.

->To the western ear, it seems quite Narm anti-climactic and quaint, but to the Japanese, this is \\\'\\\'strong \\\'\\\'language. It is the Challenge, and it is rarely defeated. Specifically, it has to do with a notion in the Japanese culture of narrowing possibilities; if the subject can\\\'t be forgiven for a transgression, then the only \\\'\\\'other\\\'\\\' option is that he\\\'s about to get his head ripped off or otherwise punished in a severe fashion. It also has to do with the fact that in Japanese culture, being able to both ask for forgiveness and accept it are considered a virtue, therefore refusing to accept their forgiveness holds a lot more weight. And the person who can\\\'t forgive \\\'\\\'won\\\'t\\\'\\\' give this up. Back in the era of the samurai and the like, this had even more teeth since the person who made this challenge very likely \\\'\\\'would\\\'\\\' chase you to the ends of the earth for revenge. Basically, it\\\'s only said to someone who (in the speaker\\\'s opinion) has crossed the MoralEventHorizon, but also entails a burden: the speaker is \\\'\\\'so\\\'\\\' offended that a RoaringRampageOfRevenge is the \\\'\\\'only\\\'\\\' option. Obviously, it can overlap with PreAsskickingOneLiner, so expect serious butt-kicking in the following RightMakesMight fight.
