According to a fairly recent [[WordOfGod Word of Faust]], Spike was mostly raised by \'\'Celestia\'\' because ponies simply don\'t know much about dragons. Because of that, I\'m just assuming that Twilight \'\'couldn\'t\'\' do any research on dragon life cycles because there was nothing \'\'to\'\' research.
