I ask about instances where Word of God says the animators didn't intend these characters to look similar to old ones.

I'd call it a co-incidence then.
What do you call it when someone thinks a cartoon character looks similar to a character from an older, unrelated series, but then it turns out the animators didn't mean to make them look similar?
