It's pretty much a case of borrowing/ripping-off Evangelion. Both the opening and closing credits used this. I can't think of a show that used it before Eva.
A Title Sequence shows full body portraits of one or more characters, only they're upside-down (at least from the viewer's point of view). They usually seem to be female. They may also be juxtaposed with upright portraits. Examples I've seen:
- Some of the female characters in Baldr Force EXE Resolution, along with sideways variants
- Rai in Jyu Oh Sei, along with his brother Thor who is shown upright
- Makina in Shikabane Hime
