As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site. Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it. Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.

Important things to know:

  • We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
  • Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
  • Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.

This a Query Wishlist request. Regardless, so people won't keep pages to themselves indefinitely.

Yeah i requested to remove it if it was possible

Reasoning? Then it would become possible for peoppe to override each others edits because there's no editing queue.

Reasoning because it makes peole rush

The edit limit has been in place since 2007, I think. Back then it wasn't scripted.

There's beauty in even the smallest moments.

The edit timer will never be removed unless something else prevented conflicting edits and, If anything, the timer would most likely be increased not decreased since ive seen multiple complaints about tropers not having enough time to edit larger pages.

That's interesting considering we tend to tell people to plan their edits in advance, and for trending pages often someone opens a page in edit view and blocks it for everyone for full 30 minutes.

This has no likes and I’ve only personally seen complaints about the opposite. Not sure what you’re referring to with “we tend to tell people”, is this a rule or guide written somewhere?

Idea: What about an inactivity timer that will automatically trigger the expiration of the lock if you don't do anything for a certain amount of time?

If it's a rule, it's probably unwritten, because we encourage planning edits in a sandbox or a notepad so the actual editing would take as little time as possible. Pre-making large edits elsewhere is alao good as people tend to be in a hurry, forget what Preview button is for, and turns out it needs more corrections if not a reverr.

I've asked in policy forum for additional comments.

I actually like the inactivity monitor. If someone opens an edit mode but isn't actually editing (either intentionally or forgetting it in another tab), they're just wasting time of others who could have added something.

To be fair, I've occasionally sat the timer out in order to keep active vandals away from re-vandalizing a page. So it's not always a good idea to have an early lock time-out, though these cases are rare and very specific so I can understand not worrying about them.

But, yes, we do encourage people to draft their work ahead of time. It comes up whenever people ask about the lock timer, because often they misunderstand the point of it (they think they'll be unable to edit if it expires).

Remind me, what actually happens when you try saving after expiry?

Amonimus (Sergeant)

^ Either it will still save normally or will block with a message that someone has already opened the page and making it necessary to reload.

Sometimes resulting in people going Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, F5, Ctrl+V, not bothering to check what the new edit was, and casuing Edit Stomp.

Yeah, the lock just prevents others from editing it. Once it expires, you can still save your edit but you're at risk at someone else sniping it.

^^ Get it.

^ How would someone else be able to snipe your post-expiry edit if, according to Amonimus, you will be blocked from saving if someone else has the page currently locked?

Amonimus (Sergeant)

^ Lock expires, the page is no longer locked. Sniping is by the second editor.

Right. I meant that you may be "sniped" by not being able to get an edit through because someone else hopped in while the lock expired. The edit was sniped — taken from under you. Probably the wrong word but it sounded correct at the time.

All clear.

On topic, 20 minutes is plenty if you come prepared. And you can easily extend the clock by quickly saving+re-entering before anyone notices. That's why I would prefer a lower setting or replacing the current way with the suggested inactivity clock (5 min?) that resets itself while you are busy editing.

The inactivity checker will be an addition to the current edit timer. As long as you’re editing, the timer will stay on track for 20 min. If you are inactive for several minutes it will auto expire after giving you a warning.

Would we have to vote on such a feature?

No, this is something already approved by upper management. It will most likely go live within the next couple weeks.
