Honestly, I would agree with the edit reason. At the time, the Mandarin twist ruined both Killian and Slattery, but since the actual Mandarin appeared in Shang-Chi, I've seen fan boards online and such being far more willing to forgive Killian's flaws as a villain because of A.) all the behind the scenes stuff that led to the twist in the first place, and B.) the twist itself has become less and less hated overtime, in part because the MCU now has a bigger history of twisting comic book lore and this was one of the more forgivable attempts at such.

^So there was a change in how the character was seen, just in the opposite direction. Either that, or opinions on Killian became stronger in both directions.

Would a rewrite be the best solution here?

Honestly I don't think that entry is true either. Like Justin Hammer feom the second film. I saw people who even wouldn't mind Killian coming back.

Would a rewrite like this work? It's obviously far from perfect and I'm open to suggestions.

  • Character Perception Evolution: Initially post-release, Aldrich Killian was considered one of the weakest villains of the MCU, in large part due to his role in the twist regarding the fake Mandarin, Trevor Slattery, and the lack of strong charisma that previous villains like Red Skull and Loki had. As time has gone on and the Mandarin twist has gradually been viewed more and more positively (in no small part due to the real Mandarin becoming one of the most popular villains of the MCU), the perception of Killian has become far more positive than before. While he's not one of the most popular villains of the MCU, he's no longer near the bottom; it's generally agreed that Guy Pearce gives an entertaining and surprisingly nuanced performance, the Mandarin twist and Killian's role in it were both brave departures from audience expectations that helped set up the real Mandarin's later appearance, and he plays a great role in Tony's character arc. Some viewers even admit they wouldn't mind if Killian were to somehow return in a later work.

I think STAR's rewrite is a big improvement.

If it's accurate, then I'm all for adding it.
