okay over the span of a couple of weeks i finished the game's story, came to realize that azure rathalos is a fucking bitch, and got one of my dream armor sets; the plasstier set!!! >B)

gonna focus to getting to g*3 within the next couple of months, currently at hr5 because i wanted to finish the story before tackling gathering hall stuff.

BTW As you advance through the guild quests, new Town Quests open up for, like, mini stories. These sometimes give good awards (The Cheeko Sands one gives you a special Palico, for example), but are mostly used for solo grinding monsters. These continue into G-Rank, so you can get some pretty good shit quick.

also yes azure rathalos is a dickle

they make you fight one alongside a tigrex in G2, and if you want to have any hope in beating Gogmazios, you'll fight a frenzied one alongside a frenzied Brachydios.

pro tip is that if you know how to space during that mission, the brach will do more damage to the Rathalos than you'll be able to deal.

and evade distance makes rathalos so much more managable

what weapon do you main btw?

Insect Glaive doesn't require any armor skills, though Razorsharp is a huge help and the current endgame glaives profit from Sharpness+1 a lot more than other weapon types.

While it's easy to learn, there aren't many weapons to choose from until G3. From HR 8 onward, the best glaive available is an upgrade of the Dalamadur one. Getting it is a pain though.

In G-Rank there are great alaives from the elder dragons, Daora, Chameleos and Crimson Fatalis are available as of now.

Brachydios has a less burst-y version of the C.Fatalis Glaive, but that requires farming two different rare drops.

Anubis is the best raw glaive and crafted from both Diablos' parts. It also doesn't need Zenit Gems L for honing, which makes farming easier.

Next month we might get the quests for the twin Rath glaive, but until then you're kinda dependet on relics for elemental glaives.

Most people will tell you to follow the strength path to get a bug with effect extender. Overall, that's the most usefull one because some monster make it really, really hard getting your buffs together and Apex Jho is just a nightmare.

Generally, you will learn to send your bug while you position yourself between attacks to keep up Red/White buffs. But when all three buffs are active, you can't renew them until they've run out.

Some people use elemental insects and kill some monster with them only in decent times, but that's really dependent on the monster.

You will do your best to stick to the monster like glue, Evasion+1 is great here. Glaives get the most damage out of the infinite X+X+A combo, but you will frequently interrupt it and reposition. Save your mounts for when the monster enrages/someone is in danger and keep track of the jump attacks on the monster to time it right.

Get stupid ammounts of money and caravan points, buy whetstones and insect fodder in bulk when cheap/available. Maybe level yourself a guild quest to 136 just for the Stat++ stuff, it's really convenient.

The ++ Nectars can be found in the Everwood at G-rank, starting at level 86 for the Guild Quests.

Personally, I'd prefer if the 'net was a little friendlier, but you know the GIFT...

I prefer normal Stat+, because I can mass buy them from Old Man Guy.

Since someone described the Glaive better than I ever could, I'll go into Charge Blade real quick.

The weapon is extremely fun to use, and has possibly the most versatility out of all the weapons: It's the only weapon I use on Expeditions because of this.

The phials are self explanatory, hit with sword then charge for special impact attacks, but if you do your "super charge" (accessed with either A-A-A or A+X), and then press R, you'll supercharge the shield, giving it better defensive power and boosting the power of the Axe. It also gives some of your sword attacks the effect of whatever Phial your Charge Blade specializes in.

The most noteworthy moves are the sword's A+X, a fast, two hit shield thing attack that's good for status and elemental damage, and deals impact/extra elemental damage depending on your phial in Charge Mode, the Ultra Charge, used by using up all your phials and doing the normal Super Charge Slap Attack (if you want to use the normal Super Charge, then during the windup for Ultra Charge, hold the control pad in the direction opposite of where you are facing, and press X), and the notorious Guard Point, where switching from Sword to Axe at the right time will bring the shield in front of you for a special guard.

I really, REALLY enjoy this weapon if you couldn't tell.

also how the balls do i beat apex zinogre

Freedom Unite, I think? Definitely second generation, from what I know.

Also Apex Zinogre's an exercise in frustration

Thankfully I hear Apex Diablos is easier since his legs are his weakness, so as long as I use something that swings more vertically, I'll be fine. Problem is, the only "mostly verticle" weapon I can think of is Sns, and that's based around a lot of elemental damage, which simply isn't feasible against Apex.

Also G-Rank Shigeru Miyamoto is hard.

Switchaxe's infinite combo in sword mode is purely vertical strikes. X to overhead slash down, then A to underhand slash up. Repeat until you need to dodge.

wait did i say vertical

shit i meant horizontal

tho the switch axe sword doesn't go too high, does it?

It goes pretty high, but for horizontal you can stick with the switcher combo. Axe mode forward+X for the thrust, R to switch to sword while the thrust is extended(also an attack, vertical, but low hitting), A to sideslash with the sword, then R while the slash is extended to switch back to axe with a quick sidechop. Repeat.

Ooooo I like it.

I wish I haven't gotten into Hunting Horn when all these Apex beasts arrived, because it's hard to hit specific weak points with it.

I cannot seem to kill Dalamadur in time. I have pretty much every attack boost I can get. Dragon Atk +2 and I'm using Brimstren Drakepride on it.

Dala takes a bit of practise until you got his pattern good enough to dish out maximum damage.

If you feel like getting an extra grinding, there's alsways the cheesing option. Get the Gore lance or another dragon lance, make a set with Sharpsword/Dragon Att Up, swallow a Mega Dash Juice and just charge at his claw/head.

Still doing Tri.

Been meaning to go up against the Gobul, but I lack any good defense against Paralysis, which is an issue if I want to go for the tail.

I've considered using one of my Heavy Bowguns with a shield, but the two I currenly have can really use slicing ammo (though I'm not sure of that, and will need to check), and I'm unsure of my aim as well. Also, I don't have much anyway.

That leaves either the Great Sword, or either of my Lances so I can defend against his flash attack. I prefer Long Swords or Switch axes for mobility, but in this case, defending is better.

I also have the option of making Bhanabara Armour for Paralysis defence, but I understand it's got pretty poor defence anyway, so I'm unsure if that's a wise move.

What would you guys suggest I do?

Stab it.

Stab it a lot.

I hear that's an effective strategy.

Personally, I find Lances to be the best weapons for underwater combat, because their incredible defenses make up for your reduced mobility in the water.

(Sorry, I bought Tri for a wii without knowing they were shutting the servers down in a month. I got through most of the singleplayer stuff, but got royally pissed when I learned that over half the content was inaccessable offline and they had just ripped it away from me. I quit playing, and only recently became forgiving enough to buy 4U and a 3DS to play it. Completely skipped 3U out of bitterness and spite.)

Fair enough.

Alright. I'll go with my Gun lance then. It's stronger. I'll just have to be careful I suppose.

So I beat the Gobul in Tri, but only barely. I was past the 5 minute mark when I killed him, but I did it.

But I didn't get either the lantern or the tail.

I suck with the Gun lance underwater, or more to the point, I suck with it against the Gobul and it's greater maneuverability.

If I want to get some good parts, I'm gonna need to use a weapon that lets me move faster.

I'm also gonna have to do better when it's on land.

Or I could try the Great Sword. At least then I can still roll.

......How do you get the Lantern anyway? It's kinda out of reach.

Well, whatever. Once I get the hang of it's patterns, I can fight it much better.

Anyway, soon, I'll be able to kill the Lagombi and the Baggi, and get stuff from them as well.
