Shutting down explorer fixes it?
I preferred the Conquerors Expansion, myself.

My Pm box is open.I preferred Age Of Mythology and Empire Earth to AOK (I dunno, I could never get into AOK) but it was a great game nonetheless. Correct me if I'm misguided here but (other than Starcraft 2) I seem to notice a dearth of RTSes like the Age Of Empires series, which makes me sad.
Age of Mythology was the better game, But Age Of Empires 2 (both the original and expansion) introduced me to history and computers. I wouldn't be here without it, so it gets higher points in my book. Empire Earth won't work on my computer.

Heck yeah, I loved the Persians!

Me? I really like the Japanese for their Samurais and their fast-assembling trebuchets.

Not a patch, but I've managed to get rid of that by doing the following:
1. Change your desktop wallpaper to a solid color. Any color is fine, but it has to be that single color accross the whole desktop.
2. Open the window where you change your screen resolution. So right click on desktop and select ""Screen resolution". Leave this window open while you play the game. You can minimize it, but not close it.
When you stop playing you can close the window and change the wallpaper. To make it quicker I saved a custom theme where the background is one-colored, makes it much faster to do all this.
Guys, we already have a general AOE thread here.
OP: Try changing your desktop settings to 16 bit colouring. That might help.

My FF.net accountYeah, the problem with older games is their issues with hardware that's too new for them.
I never minded the color issues myself.
Oh, and Huns = Broken.
No, Huns = Awesome.

My Pm box is open.@ WUE: Given the length of time between AOE II and III, enough hype had developed that it would never have lived up to expectations. I've got III and 'The Warchiefs Expansion', both of which are pretty great. The Home City, new setting and unit rebalances will take a bit of getting used to, though. Plus it glosses over the less..illustrious elements of the colonial era.
And I played my copy of The Conquerors to death, resurrected it and played it to death again. I never really had a favourite civ to play as, though, or a scrappy civ either. I've changed from a turtler to a boom/rush player, though, so I'd probably give the Goths and Huns more turns if I went back to it. Anyone have any definite favourites?

Aww, did I hurt your widdle fee-fees?The Persians. I also liked the Aztecs.

Yeah, the barbarians were always fun. Spain was overrated, England was lame, the Chinese were boring compared to them.

Having no need for houses pretty much breaks the game in your favor.
The Byzantines were always useful against the french, but they never could defeat the Goths. That's how it happened with me, at least.

Aww, did I hurt your widdle fee-fees?Byzantines are defensive powerhouses. Of course, plopping down Barracks after Barracks right near their settlements and cranking out infantry is too easy.
Who do you think would win, a group of elite cataphracts or a group of halberdiers, if the resources spent for both sides was the same?
Aww, did I hurt your widdle fee-fees?Cataphracts.

Goths are great, but if you don't finish the game by Castle Age, you're screwed (no walls).

I wonder why there isn't a subject for this yet.
Anyways, I consider this the best of the AOE series. Haven't played it for quite a while though. Could there perhaps be a patch somewhere that I could use to fix the color problem (I run Windows 7) without having to shut down explorer.exe?
