Battlefor Wesnoth, until I got to the Eastern Invasion campaign. That just killed the fun for me sad and Iji. I've beaten one pacifist game, Extreme difficulty, and I think the first 4 sectors in Sudden Death. I only have two posters tongue and my next project is Nanomaster... when I get to it.

I hardly never even play the main campaigns in Wesnoth anymore, just online matches. I like RPG and survival-type maps, to the point where I'm horribly rusty at just the regular style of gameplay.

Oddly, and this didn't come to my mind first, I forgot America's Army. The players are generally decent people and the U.S. government keeps hacking pretty low. Being free is good enough for me, but it's a game that requires a lot of team-based skill and isn't as oppressive against new people as some other FP Ss are.

Is America's Army still available for Linux?

Let's see... There's Spelunky, Nethack, X-Com's-spirit-brother UFO: Alien Invasion, shooters from ABA games, Gemcraft Tower Defense Chapter Zero, and bunch of dead (as in no-longer-updated) freebies like CDogs, Liero v1.33 (a realtime Worms-1v1-deathmatch affair), and Doom The Roguelike.

This makes me think so, but I've never used Linux before so I don't have a sure answer.

My favorite freeware game remains I Wanna Be The Guy. It's the first one I downloaded and played for extended periods of time. The game has ridiculous video game cameos and the many of my deaths, especially the unexpected ones, make me laugh and cry all at once.

I've recently discovered the joys of Cave Story and Yume Nikki. Yume Nikki was a fun little game. I got to walk around and just look at stuff or play with my mostly useless abilities. Cave Story is wonderful. The music, the gameplay, Balrog the giant toaster/lunchbox/computer monitor man. I haven't beaten it yet but I will.

Another game I'm fond of Syobon Action. It's not nearly as great now that I know how to beat the levels, but when I first started it was funny. Think you can jump over the gap? OWNED! Star? OWNED! I like things like that.

I like An Untitled Story, Battle For Wesnoth, and if you haven't played Seiklus, that's definitely worth a look. To be honest, this wiki is what got me into freeware in the first place.

I keep fading in and out of Dwarf Fortress periodically. It has an interesting premise, but a combination of a desire to overmicromanage and a short attention span tend to lead me to abandon a fort right after the first migration. arrives...

Brass Restoration was pretty good. If anyone here enjoys visual novels, I'd definitely recommend it.

EDIT: Nearly forgot: Oolite. A remake of the classic Elite in object-oriented code. Also has a ton of addons.

Aondeug: You seem to have far more tolerance for intentionally insulting design than I do. I actually played and beat Syobon Action; four levels of that is about the most I'm willing to accept. I refuse to play IWBTG, though, even though I know it's lulzy.

Now, if you want to have some fun, hit 0 on the title screen of Syobon Action.

Alphaman is like an extremely goofy ASCII Fallout.

Well, that's a terrible description and it's not accurate at all. But it's quite challenging and a very fun post-apocalyptic action-RPG... if challenging.

I adore IWBTG but I have to admit defeat — after spending months on Mecha Birdo/Mother Brain/Dr. Wily/Kirby racing part... on EACH... I had to admit I do not have the skill to pass this game. Still love it though.

Jumper 2 is really good, I'm currently at 7-5, and I totally love this one. :D

Also: Bricks by Andreas Rottler. Currently I'm up to Bricks III. Series Needs More Love. Badly.

Recently finished Arc 2 of Master Of The Wind. Not bad, although the graphics and maps leave much to be desired.

I found an interesting short game: Tower of Heaven. You try to climb a tower against the wishes of a deity who seems to live at the top, who retaliates by thrusting "rules" on you (such as "no walking left") in hopes of finding an excuse to smite you, along with just enough spikes of doom and deathtraps to evoke the Platform Hell style without actually being all that hard. It's pretty fun. Also has extremely catchy music.

How do you get past that "no walking left" level, anyway?

Simple: You jump left. Carefully, though, since the smiter is not at all forgiving if you accidentally break the rule.

Tower of Heaven was really neat. :)

Did anyone here find the so-called "secrets"? I didn't.

Here's some unique puzzle-platformers for you to try: G.E.N.E.R.I.C. Platformer and FallOver, both by Hempuli.

Many moons ago, I found a cool freeware puzzle/platformer called Wally in the Land of the Wallows, which was silly, but pretty slick and fun. Though the puzzles were kind of obnoxious sometimes, and the running was a little "slippery." I need to dig it up again.
