Hello, just wanting wanting to get into the Touhou fandom after not being there for a while, are there any good videos or things for overall information on the Touhou verse?

[up][up] Hmm. I think I've seen a few "What is Touhou?" videos recommended by YouTube, but never actually watched them, so I can't say how helpful they are. The Touhou Wiki is a good source of information about the games' plot, complete with translations and whatnot of both the game scripts and the supplementary material. Our own wiki has a bunch of character pages if you want to get to know the cast members by way of tropes, a list of links to music if you want to experience one of the games' main draws, recommended fan vids to watch that range from tooth-rotting to nightmare-inducing, but no Recap pages for the series yet, hmm.

Hope some of that helps.

Roughly when did you stop? Touhou Wiki is a good way to catch up on the games' stories. (We're up to 16 now!).

Also, as of this year, Forbidden Scrollery ended publication, Touhou 16 is released, 15.5 is coming out in late Dec. Touhou 16 is also officially on Steam (albeit untranslated).

And of course, feel free to stick around with us! If you have any specific questions we'll be happy to oblige!

This tumblr post is also a really good introduction to Touhou, in a "what is Touhou" kind of way.

Actually, are you trying to get into the fandom as a new fan or as an old fan who stopped following the series?

If you're new I'd recommend just taking your time, going through the characters page here on TV Tropes and pick your favorite character!

I know very few people care here, but apparently our LP of FMW 4 has drawn the attention of the developers, Sanbondo. Also a follow-up tweet. Translations:

"I knew there were let's plays of FMW 4, but to think there'd be one with English subtitles...! It's amazing how they included nuance and even the peculiar charm. (Link goes to chapter 64, beware of spoilers)"

"Thanks to the liveliness of the conversations and the way they put things, I'm sure the translator was able to hear the voices of the characters. And the parts that were subtly different are teaching me where the Japanese was hard to understand."

This is the first time I've translated someone praising me.

[up][up]Wow. That's impressive. You should be proud of that. I'm no translator but I understand how difficult it can be. So the fact that you've managed to impress the original developers of FMW is no small feat.

Thank you for all the links so far, that does help for refreshing my knowledge on all things Touhou.

[up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up] I don’t think I stopped being a fan of Touhou, but that other games showed up and they drew my attention and it drifted away from Touhou. I would say it was still there but I did not pay it as much attention and so I came back to it now because I noticed it when my one of favourite lets player was playing a fan game of it.

[up][up][up][up][up][up]When I was last focused on Touhou, Double dealing character was out so I would say that was quite a few years ago. I find it difficult picking my favourite character so my top three characters are Alice Margatroid, Reisen Udongein Inaba and Byakuren Hijiri.

First off, congratulations to Clarste

Now, I don't know if there's videos summing up all these events, so all I can do is to build a wall with text.

[up] If it's from the time of Double Dealing Character, when I got into the fandom, then the following events have happened since then.

Urban Legend in Limbo, a fighting game like Hopeless Masquerade with art by the Forbidden Scrollery artist (Moe Harukawa), where urban legends and horror stories come to life in Gensokyo, not-quite-dragon-balls show up, and a high school girl (Sumireko Usami) nearly destroys Gensokyo. Features Kasen, Sukuna, and Mokou as playable characters.

Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, where the main characters go to the MOON where the lunarians live after Gensokyo gets invaded by bunnies wielding a mallet and some dangos. They go to the moon through Dream Land, fighting a baku along the way. On the moon, they fight a one-winged angel with a dangerous mouth and difficult to define power, an AMERICAN (according to fandom) FAIRY, Junko, and a greek goddess with an infamous shirt.

Meanwhile, in print works, Kasen ibaraki from Wild and Horned Hermit is revealed to be a youkai sage like Yukari, basically helped creating Gensokyo. The art has also gotten significantly better.

It's around this time that the Forbidden Scrollery manga came to an end. Some were disappointed by the ending, others are fine with it. You should read it.

Visionary Fairies in Shrine is a new touhou manga, continuing the Sangetsusei Three Fairies series. Now featuring the famous Clownpiece. It's super cute and super fun.

There's also a touhou magazine called Strange Creators of Outer World and a rather interesting book Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia, where Aya becomes worse at journalism before getting scolded by a greek goddess and is basically a book about "where are they now?" on minor characters.

Hidden Star in Four Seasons is the newest released Touhou game and it is super cute and involves the seasons in Gensokyo going out of whack. There's a butterfly fairy with a weird name, a very nice mountain woman with a cleaver, a now rather popular Shiisa girl, two dancers, and one of Yukari's former comrades, another youkai sage who is both the final boss AND Extra boss.

Antimony of Common Flowers is a new Touhou fighting game coming out soon. Two new character silhouettes has been revealed and Doremy is confirmed to be playable.

Whew.

So alot of Touhou has been released in the 4 years since not really been focusing on Touhou,

Yeah I have alot of catching up to do I would say and thank you very much for the info dump on recent Touhou stuff.

Just going to settle on familiarising myself with all the many colourful characters of Touhou again since that will take a fair bit in of itself.

So I was thinking about the blonde member of the Sealing Club. Yeah I know ZUN didn't have an actual name in mind when he came up with "Maeriberii", but...

If we assume that she's Greek-Irish like her namesake, then variants of "Mary" are common in both countries. It's popular for Greek girls to have a double-barreled name, the first being something common and the second obscure or mythological, and likewise in Ireland for Mary to be combined with something else.

So suppose her parents decided to give her a name in the Greek form - "Maria-Berri(e)" - then give it an Irish spelling. Maria would be rendered into its Irish equivalent and Berri(e) transcribed phonetically, so the result would be something like Máire-Bheirí or Máire-Bheiridh (or they could just go with Máire-Berri(e), and use one of the other spellings only while speaking Irish). In katakana that could come out as "Maereberii" (or "Moereberii", depending on accent).

Some obscure Japanese account has uploaded a number of the full cuts of the Kyoto Active Neets live studio recordings. Here's 'The Gensokyo the God's Loved.'

Edit: That's weird. Directly linking to the video is getting an error message. Here's the video page for the account. I especially like "Bad Apple" which is the most recent of the Neet uploads and "Gensokyo the Gods Loved" is the second Orchestral video from most recent.

As I am re-exploring Touhou, I have also re-discovered that I was not able to find an absolute favourite character back then and now with all the new characters, in a surprising shock, I have still not been able to find an actual absolute favourite character yet.

Those most of my favourite are more from the games I was there for, the newer ones aren't standing out as much compared to the previous characters in my opinion.

[up]Thanks for keepin' us updated on your rediscovery of Touhou! smile I'm genuinely interested in these posts!

Hmmm, so none of the new chars of the last years have jumped out at you? surprised Hmm, that's a pity... did you follow Mr. Mushroom's excellent advice and have given the new Five Fairies Manga a read yet? It comes very highly recommended by me and, I think, all of us here![tup]

If Clown Girl, breakout Touhou Star of the century, doesn't jump out at you in all her awesome 'MURICAN GLORY from that manga, I would also recommend watching the fight against her in her respective game! It's something to behold![tup]

And finally! You say you're still undecided about who your favorite Touhou Char is. Well, there is a very, VERY fun, but loooooong perfect solution for this! The Awesome Giant Touhou Character Sorter!! grin Here it is, have fun! It gives you a lot of freedom which chars you wanna exclude from the sorting process right from the start, so you can fine-tune it at your leisure! Please be so kind and inform us of your results when you've gone through it! grin

(Sidenote: the old link that I (and maybe some of you still) had bookmarked for the Sorter is dead now! But upon googling it, I found it re-uploaded at this new address)

Thanks, I was trying to not post too often because I did not want to just flood posts on my thoughts about touhou and my second impressions I would say, so it is nice to be appreciated.

I was thinking about why the newer characters do not strike out as much compared to the previous ones and it I think it just boils down to, I have known the previous characters more, listen to their theme along with all the remixes and the biggest point, is that I have only seen the newer characters in Zun art, so my impressions on their designs are not as great.

I still need to get through all the new material as I am still going through all the characters as they are and also is that a thing to sort through all the characters of Touhou, yikes that sounds like it would take a while but I guess I will go through it.

Edit Went through the sorter and according to it my top ten characters, from tenth place to first place are, Utsuho, Marisa, Sakuya, Kanako, Momiji, Sanae, Keine, Alice, Raiko and Byakuren. I would say Raiko was fairly high on the list cause she has a really amazing theme and that is a key point for a relative new character, well for me at least.

That happens to me all the time as well, whenever a new trailer/game comes up the newcomers feel flat and boring compared to the others, it's not until I've found a certain amount of good fanart, remixes, etc. that they start standing out.

On unrelated news, I wonder how/why there's a "Extra Stage midboss shows up and says three lines of unskippable dialogue before the battle starts" tradition.

And that's how I ended up in the wardrobe. It Just Bugs Me!

Probably to make sure that the extra stage music still syncs up with the action.

I actually tend to find myself the opposite, being overly excited about the newcomers whenever they come out and wishing to see more of them in the future. Remember when I got excited over a girl being a statue and another carrying a cleaver and yet another having bits of other bosses's music in them? I always think "Wow, I can't wait to see fanart of them and to see them in print works.".

I'm probably being a hipster.
