By the Seven, Koishi is still up there!? ...wow. So it wasn't just a one-time fluke, because she had just appeared in a new game, like last time? What did she do since then that she could hold that position!?!?
Youmu at 4, however, makes me hyper happy, since, you know, she's my favorite Touhou. 
...although, to be fair, you could levy the same accusation at her as I did with Koishi up there. What did she do lately in any Touhou Media, that she's still so popular? (Well, yeah, she had her hilarious scene in the Five Fairies manga, but that's not a lot...)
The rest are all classics, pretty much, so no surprise there. Aya pretty high, but actually, considering her huge role in FS lately, she should maybe be even higher.
Well, it was sadly kinda to be expected... impossible to break through all the Classic Characters to get very high (unless you're Koishi, apparently!?!?). Where's Clown Girl at? (*asking with the fear that she might be even lower*)
Fully agreed. That was a role that really hit like a bomb, that chapter sparked A LOT of discussion and insights.

I think it's pretty clear that appearances in games or manga actually have extremely little effect on the top 10. I mean, why else would Flandre be a constant there? I think it's more likely that a large number of voters long ago decided who their favorites were and perhaps even feel that voting otherwise would be a betrayal of their waifu. There's much more churn in the lower ranks because you invest less of your identity into your 4th or 7th favorites.

That makes perfect sense! In retrospect, I should have realized that sooner; especially, now that I think about it, since I kinda do the same thing! (Well, with my own Top Ten list, not the official one, since I don't vote on that) You're right, I also don't consider recent appearances when choosing my favorites, Youmu's always at the top no matter what.
There were exceptions lately, though... in my last Top Ten list, Mokou did climb up a LOT after ULIL showed us all her Badass self in motion. And Clown Girl, as a new character, also got in. So those things can happen, and the first time that Koishi cataputed herself into the Top Three last time was such an occasion, no doubt about it.
Pfft, I liked Koishi before she was popular.
At 30. Not bad I'd say.
Cirno is at 35. I'm always surprised to see her far from the top, with all her appearances in farworks you'd expect her to be much popular than she actually is.

That's pretty OK, yeah! Although... I did hope a bit she might be really high. I see no reason why not, with the precedent set by Koishi.
I agree! Wow, that's pretty low. That's really weird. She's a Classic Character! She's one of the most well-known Touhou chars in the world!
The thing with Koishi though, is that she has a tragic background with a unique present state. These make her stand out above many of other characters. Even if she doesn't appear much anymore, she's still going to stand out in people's mind. Also she uses unique danmaku, that helps her standing out even more. Also people like Cute and Psycho character, hence Flandre.
Clownpiece and Hecatia, by comparison, aren't really special personality-wise (from what I've seen). Hecatia has silly design...and not much. Clownpiece fares a bit better by starring in a manga, but she seems like just another of the Fairies instead of being her own character. I can imagine her getting much higher if she has a story focus entirely for herself though.
Cirno I imagine is well-known and liked by many people. But few actually have her as favorite favorite. Basically she's that guy who's friendly and popular but gets friendzoned by every girl.

I don't think things have really changed on my Top 10 list, which if I recall correctly was like...
Byakuren, Tenshi/Kokoro, Mamizou, Miko/Kasen, Mystia/Sumireko, Sukuna/Kosuzu.
Like, the Top 3's never going to really change, I'm pretty adamant on that, but Kasen has overtaken Miko instead of outright tying, Mystia probably would go down to below Sukuna, and Hecatia would replace Kosuzu, sooo...
Byakuren, Tenshi/Kokoro, Mamizou, Kasen, Miko, Sumireko, Sukuna, Mystia, Hecatia. That's my current Top 10.
I wonder how things would change if there were multiple categories, like, "I'd like to see more of...", "I enjoy fanworks centered on...", "...makes a great supporting character for my favorites" and so forth.

I'd like to see more of... : Oh goodness, so many! IKU! Always Iku. So pretty and cool, and she disappeared off the grid entirely after her one game Also, always Rika<3 and Yumemi<3, the only parts of PC-98 I care about. Alice, as aleady stated before. And so on.
I enjoy fanworks centered on... : Well, I don't consume fanworks, really... If it's 4koma or similar funny comics, I don't really care who stars in it, it's about the humor. As to pretty pictures... Youmu always. But after her...group pictures; not really wanting anyone specific, as long as it looks good.
Makes a great supporting character for my favorites : ...I got nothing here, sorry. Anyone can work, really!
Most Badass : AGAIN, always Youmu. Mokou is the Queen of Badass. Sakuya. Meiling. Kasen, too! This is indeed one of my chief reasons for putting chars on my Top Ten list in general.
Funniest : CLOWN GIRL! Cirno. Marisa. Scaredy-cat Youmu.
Most Huggable : Cirno! Any Fairy, really. Scaredy-cat Youmu, again.
Favorite Obscure Character Who If She Wins Won't Be Eligible For This Category Next Year : Rika<3 and Yumemi<3, again, obviously. Iku is practically obscure at this point, too, kinda. The Great Youkai Tailor!

Just for fun, let me check my old lists! (Yes, I keep saves of all of them, I'm obsessive.) ...ok, so my earliest is from April 2013, and my newest from September 2015 (wow, that's been a while; I suspect I didn't make a new one since there haven't been any new games or other big Touhou happenings since then...). In those 2 1/2 years, the following big changes occurred:
- Kogasa dropped from #2 (!) to #6
- Ichirin (#6, wow, I don't even remember that O_O), Eirin, Meiling and Eiki all disappeared from the Top Ten (Ichirin dropping to #37 (!!!) )
- Kokoro, Clown Girl and Sumi all instantly entered the Top Ten as soon as they existed. Just damn good characters.

I got sick and missed the poll results. Seems to be a normal day at the polls from what I can see. It seems Koishi will be a constant presence in the top 10s now, she hasn't the left the top 3 at all. Sagume is actually just 2-3 votes away from being in the top 20, 3674 points compared to Patchouli's 3676 points.
Someday, someone is going to depict Hecatia with a bubble on her hat.

You know what's disappointing? The lack of Pokemon being used as hat toppers for Hecatia. You've got plenty of of spherical Pokemon, and Swablu has it listed in its Pokedex entry that it nests on people's heads.
Also someone pointing out her Voltorb hat was flashing would be a nice segway into an Oh, Crap! moment.
