Looks like it's Koishi next, eh? Dear lord, I'm gonna get Hartmann's stuck in my head again. Sounds like fun!

Is it wrong that I found the funniest part of that particular comic to be Koishi going "Yo, man" to the yamaxanadu?

I have a message from another time...

No.

Though "Forehead. Genetalia." was the funniest to me.

Nah. Every part of that comic is the funniest part so you're completely right.

Koishi, Koishi, Koishi. A doujin that deals with her before the whole sealing the third eye thing. The same thing but in color.

Koishi is different for a satori. Most satoris (at least 50% of the canon ones) deal with the hate and fear their power evokes in those around them. In her pre-fight dialogue Satori herself seems to almost revel in it. But Koishi couldn't deal with that hate so she sealed her Third Eye. I don't think a satori had done this before because she gets a completely unexpected result, the power to manipulate the unconscious.

This power would probably subject her to more hate and fear if people knew about this but Koishi herself wouldn't care by this point. She's become carefree and wanders the world following her whims. I think Satori worries about her and apparently loaned her some of her pets hoping that the responsibility of taking care of them would ground her some. Even with this Koishi has no desire to open her Third Eye and go back to reading minds like a normal person.

This possibly changes in the extra stage. I have not personally opened it up and gotten my ass handed to me by her but I believe meeting Reimu or Marisa makes her regret closing her eye.

KimikoMuffin wrote a short story "Philosophy of a Hated Person" detailing what kind of occurrence in might take to get Koishi to open her eye again. It involves Flan shipping in case that bothers you.

Naruto'd: The look of intense concentration in the forehead genitalia panel makes it my favorite too. Although, Okuu trying to be helpful is gold as well.

KOISHI HIJACK LOL!

...I haven't got anything to add, really. Besides her theme and hat, Koishi doesn't really interest me that much. I'll check out those doujins one day, though. Perhaps that'll change my mind.

"The Scarlet Stained Memoir had a small handful of original characters which were moderately complex although some fit the story better than others. "

Actually, there were only three (and that's if you count the protagonist himself, who is sort of required as a consequence of the medium), with two more people existing in the other OC's backstory. None of them were there for shipping, though one had a close non-romantic relationship with one of the existing characters, the main character developed one with Cirno, and the third was... too much of a spoiler. I actually liked all three of them. Amusingly, though, Nate ended up becoming this giant throbbing something (I don't wanna call it a deconstruction; example doesn't feel fitting) of The Scrappy—most of the players hated and distrusted him for most of the game, and the main character hated and distrusted him almost up to the very end, but it was entirely due to the way he acted towards the main character rather than some inherent bias against OCs and by the halfway point half of them acknowledged that they were being unfair to him but couldn't bring themselves to stop anyways, and several theorized that he would have been better recieved had he been another girl (though I don't think he would have). It was also an antagonist sort of hate rather than a real Scrappy sort of hate (even if the original plan for the character smacked of The Wesley), and by the end all parties basically agreed that the story wouldn't have been half as good if the players had been buddy-buddy with Nate. Absolutely nobody seemed to mind surprise male character number two, though (perhaps because he blends in very well with the style of Touhou characters), and as I said, the main character being an OC stand-in for the readers is almost part of the premise of the entire site.

Oh, in case anyone wonders, we're talking about a story from here.

I'm totally a hypocrite for not resisting the urge to go on that tangent. Anyways, Koishi. Someone already posted her backwards tune, but I much prefer the sped up version. Though it's probably more fitting for someone insane like Flandre or reality-breaking like Yukari than a "mere" powerful character like Koishi.

I have small hands. Its why I can't eat big burgers. But maybe handful wasn't the right unit of measurement.

Anyways, Koishi. She's a strange youkai indeed. I always had the vision of a much more mature person than you'd expect, since she's a satori and used to be able to read minds. However, I wonder if she really despises having the ability to view people's subconciouses; it would definately mean having a friendship/relationship would be difficult, since she could instantly see what you're truly thinking of her, and she could instantly see anything you've got locked away down there, and she might not like all of it... (Satori wouldn't because you can mask you thoughts. You cant mask something that you aren't aware of.)

Also I wonder if she could "unlock" something hidden in someone's sub-conscience and make it reveal itself. (This is what I made her do to one of my OC's. He was insane, but had his insanity locked away by a really powerful satori psychologist. Then Koishi met him, used her powers on him—she had no idea about the psychosis—....and well, bad things happened. Really bad things. No death, but Koishi suffered a few scars that day....)

Also, I noticed something about Koishi; one of the translator notes in Lucky Star (I think it was volume 2) says that "Koishi" means "Pebbles".

Then the touhou wiki says it means "love" or "beloved". What the hell does this girls name mean?

Depends on the kanji, which we are not privy too since she writes her name in hiragana. I would've gone with pebbles too (small stone), but it seems it's almost a homonym for beloved (Koishii). Not quite though, and I'd have to question that translation.

Here's a list of possible kanji for the name Koishi. It's not necessarily complete, but it should give you an idea. Pretty much all of them refer to stones. It's worth noting that "ishi" can also mean "will" or "intent", so given her themes it's possibly a pun, but as a name it usually means "small stone" or "child stone" or something.

Koishi Komeiji

Appearance: Youtube video background

Themes:
Hartmann's Youkai Girl, Last Remote

Traits:

  • curious Genki Girl
  • carefree
    • => roaming the world without a care on her mind
  • heartless and empty <=> Love Freak
  • quite possibly more than a bit insane

Relationships/Shipping:

  • Satori (caring sister, not that their relatedness would stop shippers)
  • Marisa (an interesting human)

Write-up:
People fear having their weaknesses exposed. At the same time, people don't want to be rejected. Despite being a feared satori who could read the hearts of people, Koishi was unable to deal with the fear people had of her, and she sealed her third eye. However, that gave her the ability to manipulate the unconscious...

What does that even mean? Canon has it that closing her heart did not in fact help Koishi... Her closed eye made people stop fearing her, but they also did not love her. Her power of the unconscious lets her slip by unnoticed. Her life has become easy and fun, yet also unfulfilling and empty. She is lonely, but has no heart to feel the loneliness with. Satori felt sorry for her and made her pets play with Koishi, which helped a little... However, it was when she encountered Marisa (or Reimu) that she considered that maybe her eye should be opened once more...

Touching as this background may be, dramatic portrayals of Koishi don't appear to be very common. She is generally seen to be energetic, carefree and quite quirky, with her many references to psychology being turned into an interest in psychology or downright insanity.

So, Koishi, how do you feel about this?

Similar characters: Koishi could be described as a colorful mishmash out of a whole bunch of others' characterizations.

Man, I didn't actually know that backstory stuff until just a few minutes ago! That is, like, heavy, man. Seriously though.

I wonder if I have anything more to add, but right now it's late so I'm gonna go to bed. One thing, though: That picture I linked to, in the Youtube video? One reason I chose it is because it's pretty, the other is because it's kinda close to what I imagine her like: Small chest, big hips. ... Why is this, you ask? Well, no good reason, really.

Hm....Koishi....

I wonder what her reaction to coming back to the Hell of Blazing Fires would be. After all, a giant hell raven has just eaten a god and nearly torched genso, two crazy girls have just come in and shot every living thing in sight, and everyone is having a tea party at the end.

I have a feeling she'd ask what the fuck happened while she was gone, and then say "Screw this, it was safer up there!"

I have no idea why. I'm a wierd person.

Koishi...

I always liked her, but lately I've been in real love with her a bit. She's securing a place in my Top 5 at this rate, not that I can keep a consistant top five...

Really love Hartmann's Youkai Girl and Last Remote is very nice too. I'll probably have her songdump up soon enough and I have a short imagedump from my favorites already done, so I just need to expand that.

More detailed analysis in a bit.

Also, with all this littleshrimp and Koishi...

She heard that a human had come from above ground and had fought with her sister, Okuu, and the other pets, and was amazed at the incredible power-up Okuu had gotten, so she decided to go see the above ground world herself.

According to her Touhou wiki profile, her reaction was "huh, the surface sounds fun."

What's sort of interesting is that closing her Third Eye didn't really solve her problem. The underground youkai didn't fear her anymore but neither did they respect her and felt at most pity for her, animals no longer loved her, and her sister probably feels alienated from her. She's worse off than when she started but not in the right frame of mind to realize this.

And her powers apparently give her a Somebody Else's Problem field.

Hayabusa'd: Littleshrimp is delightfully, eyebrow-raisingly weird. And it seems Satori followed up on that train of thought.

Here's a two part question disguised as a rambling rant with little logical flow:

What do Koishi's powers do? What is the extent of their use? We already know that she can use her powers to create a Somebody Else's Problem field to make people subconsciously ignore her. We already know that she sees phallic imagery in everything and would probably say "that's what she said" whenever you try to talk. Can she manipulate your subconscious to make you less/more aggressive? Could she give you a developmental disorder or implant a sexual fetish in your mind? Can she make you think you're a ten year old girl and get Jean Grey to braid your hair? What exactly does it mean to manipulate the subconscious?

Part two: how the heck do Koishi and Satori get dressed with their eye veins all over like that? I think Koishi's attach to her ankles.
