If for no reason beyond the fact that I cannot allow such a great comic to go without discussion, we'll do that here. Go to it now.

I really liked Oceans Unmoving. <_<

The current arc is pretty engrossing. Interesting that Oasis is outside the jurisdiction of the Fate Spider. Lends some credence to the Oasis as the Sun/Moon Twin theory.

I lost interest around Oceans Unmoving. It wasn't that arc's fault, though — I'd been checking it less and less for probably years (I discovered it in 1999 or so), and that's when I finally realized that it wasn't funny or interesting to me anymore.

Sun/Moon twin? Isn't that a crazy theory that gets tossed around on sluggy.net based off of one line a side character (Basphomy or the Pumpkin king I think) said?

The Moon Twin has appeared in the background of a few story arcs, including the Holiday Wars one. Off the top of my head, she's also the one who created the cursed necklace that's now Zoe's tattoo, and I think she's been mentioned a few other times, as well.

One of the theories about what Oasis and Kusari are is that they are the Sun and Moon Twin, or vice versa. It would explain why both are effectively immortal.

Personally, I think Pete Abrams really needs to take a sabbatical to get his creative engine back in gear. It worked for Bill Watterson. The trouble is that since he's self employed, he doesn't have anyone who'll provide him with paid leave, so he has no choice but to continue cranking out the comic, no matter how much it wears him down.

I think it still has the potential to be a great comic, and Pete Abrams has proven that he can be a great writer. If he could recapture the spirit he had several years ago, I think all the material is still there for it to be as good as it ever was.

Except for the Fate Spider. I think a literal spider that weaves the strands of people's fate and has actual intercessory power is a bad idea.

Personally, I can't get enough of this comic. It's particularly exciting for me cause the current "bROKEN" arc is the first major Story Arc since I finished my Archive Trawl around the start of 2008.

And if Pete really wants to regather his energies, he should try just doing four panel, black-and-white comics again for a while. Nowadays we're getting so many double and triple sized strips that it's little surprised he gets burned out.

That only covers the overwork though. If he's creatively drained, he may need some time to recuperate. Of course, I can appreciate that there are plenty of fans of Sluggy who would be pissed off, but I would be happy to see a couple months of no updates if it meant Pete was going to return with his old flair.

Interesting you should have mentioned taking a break. Looks like he's dropping to a Mon-Wed-Fri updating schedule for the next story to give himself a chance to get caught up on everything. Hopefully the break from daily comic strips will do him good.

Am I the only one who's seen today's reveal and slammed my head over how darned obvious Oasis's status is, in retrospect?

I wouldn't say it was obvious that she's a firestarter, but I do now wonder how I missed the the fire motif she's always had going on.

Makes me wonder if we're about to see Zoe burning, as per the prophecy.

Oh, and this strip totally makes up for the upcoming filler week. Heck, it's practically as long as a week's worth of strips anyway.

I think the fire motif was pretty obvious (Fire and Rain, her burning pigtails in Gwen's visions), but not so much her as a pyrokinetic. The fire on the mountainside seemed more Gwen's doing, and the restaurant, the police station, and the "Isle" of Dr. Steve were blown up by bombs/grenades we already knew were there, not burned down.

I always thought it was evidence of her being the Sun Twin, I suppose. Although I don't think we can rule that out just yet.

They read a lot like the old gag a day strips, don't they? Which is kind of nostalgic. Reminds me of when I first started reading Sluggy.

I still prefer the "serious" story arcs, but this is more fun than a stick figure week by far.

The art is mediocre and the writing is unimpressive.

The only thing that makes it stand out in anyway is the comic's seniority, and that's not enough to get me to read past the first few strips.

The writing improves a lot from the beginning. I got through about a year's comics as an idle diversion before it really started to grab me.

The maximum quality of the art goes up a lot too, but it always depends on how much time Pete has on his hands.

Of course, as many people have noted, the comic has taken something of a downturn in recent arcs. Neither the beginning nor the present comics are representative of its best.

Admittedly, that can make it pretty hard to get into.

I liked it.

Especially KITTEN and KITTENII. Those were priceless. Oceans Unmoving was also good, if a little weird. I'm a big Bun-Bun fan. I even like the new arc, as much as everyone complains about it. Although I will admit the guy (Abrams) does need a break. The more traditional strips were kinda that.

I think the thing about the current arc is that it really reads better all at once than on a day-by-day basis. While Pete's usually good about giving each strip a punchline or dramatic weight of its own, "bROKEN" seems more like he's Writing for the Trade (or Writing For The Archive Trawl, anyway).
